need new exhaust

I've only had the car about two months, and the exhaust is causing a problem. The over the axle part is getting too hot and melting a hole in the gas tank. I've patched the tank and its fine for awhile, but then it starts leaking again. I've rotated the pipes to try to reduce heat from the area (nothings welded, it all clamped on), but it still starts leaking after while. So, now I need a new gas tank, and then I'm getting a new exhaust system. Its the only thing that I can think of to fix the problem
For those that have a cat-back system, what kind of exhaust do you have? I'm figuring they all run the same way, but I not gonna run the risk of getting a new tank and leaving the same kind of exhaust on there. I'm probably gonna get true duals, as thats the only thing that I know for sure will fix the problem. Plus I want true duals anyway.
Oh yeah, I have a hooker cat-back. -- Trent

I don't have true duals but I love my Borla, I don't have a clue why your exhaust would be doing that if it was hung correctly though. -- 99 Z-28 "Stripper" M6, SS Ram Air Hood, SS Rims, Borla Cat-Back, J&M Strut Tower Brace, Hurst Billit/Plus Shifter

I don't see why it would do that either. But I think I may have an idea on a cheaper alternative to fixing the leak. I'm gonna wait until I get really low on gas, and then sypher (sp?) the rest out. Then I'll cut out the area that has the leak, trace it onto another piece of plastic or metal, then with the new piece, I'll replace it in the hole. After that, get some JB Weld/epoxy to fill in the gaps from the other plastic, then after that dries, get some fiberglass tank repair kit and lay it over the now sealed hole. I theory, that should work, and it would be alot cheaper than getting a new gas tank and new exhaust. I'll probably try to attack that later this week. If I keep my tank half full, I shouldn't have a leak. -- Trent

maybe you could ceramic coat the part of the pipe that is getting to hot. that should keep the temps way down on that one part of the pipe. and should be way easyer then cutting into the gas tank. if you still live by TSP i bet they could do that on the cheap. --

Something is very wrong if you are melting the tank. Me thinks you or someone else removed teh heat shield. -- Owner of HBHRacing.com Xtreme performance products

^ Then it was someone else, cause I haven't done anything to the car except put in my halos, and cold air. I don't even have tinted windows yet lol
Todd, why spend the money when there might be a cheaper alternative thats works just as well? But I am looking for a gas tank anyway. -- Trent

You can not patch a plastic tank. Period.

I should've stated this the first time, don't know why I didn't.
The first time I noticed that the tank was leaking, the exhaust pipe was actually touching the tank. I lifted the car up to one side so the gas would go to the opposite side. I dried the area off thoroughly and waited for any missed spots to evaporate. I then plugged up the hole with some epoxy. The leaked stayed fixed for about 2 to 3 weeks. The pipe that was touching the tank was just floating there, so I took it to a muffler shop and had them weld it to the hanging bracket to keep it still. A few days later, I took the car on a 2 hour drive to visit the parents, and thats when it started leaking again.
I'll take some pictures tomorrow. -- Trent

You need a new tank. I thought that JB weld was for metal, and not plastic. --

He didn't say he used JB Weld. Epoxy's are two part catylizing mixtures, and there is one out there for just about any application you can think of......

Sorry I've been MIA for awhile, my internet was down for about a week.
Anyway, I found a new tank and put it in, but I still want new exhaust. -- Trent
