Race/Venting about my car

Posted By: PewterScreaminMach On: 01-04-2008 @ 22:33:29         Reply | Edit
So, I bought the new car about two months ago, knowing I had to replace the clutch because it was slipping really bad (and we found out there may have been other problems with the clutch fluid boiling and causing the car to go into neutral in high RPMs). So, I order the new clutch (LS7) and we pull everything out, tranny, old clutch, etc. We get it apart and find out that the slave cylinder was shot (something that was causing a minor oil leak) and think that that may be what's causing the clutch problem.

When the clutch arrives, we find out the guys who ordered it ordered a few of the wrong parts. So, figuring that the problem may be fixed with the new slave cylinder, we put it all back together and of course...same clutch problem.

So, I scrap the LS7 idea and just order a SPEC 3. We finally get the thing, and back on the lift goes my car. We pull everything out a second time, install the new clutch and, after some minor problems getting the tranny in, get it all back together. So, start the odometer and about 500 miles and a few days later, I punch it. SUCCESS. I shift with ease through 3 gears. EXCELLENT. Problem fixed. RedScreaminMachine and I even got a couple of races in that night (you can ask him about them).

Fast forward one, yes, that's right, just ONE single night later, and I get next to this 2000 or 2001 Trans Am that sounds REAL nice. He tells me its basically stock with just an exhaust. I figure he's lying because of the way he said it and the way the car sounded. Apparently, he wasn't lying, because from about 70 to about 100 I put at least two cars on him with him getting QUITE the jump (I couldn't hear his car when I downshifted to third, so I missed him getting on it since my eyes were on the tac - meanwhile one of my other brothers was in the passenger seat yelling for me to go - of course I was clueless).

I get part way through fourth and let off since I was so far ahead. He drives by and gives me the thumbs up while his passenger is shaking his head and raising his hands to me like "how the hell did we lose that badly?" I guess they thought my car was stock since I never mentioned anything about mods and made such a big deal about how good their car sounded.

Anyways, I push in the clutch and attempt to shift to sixth, but no. Not gonna happen. The shifter is now stuck in fourth and won't come out. The rest of the story is that I drove all the way home in fourth gear, including through a stop sign/sharp left turn (since no traffic was coming). Bottom line, only two nights after finally getting my clutch fixed and broken in and getting to actually drive my car, the tranny is gone. We need to rebuild and probably won't have it done for at least a month (RedScreamin is going to rebuild for me when I get the parts).

I just can't seem to win with this car. The very worst part of the story is that I had a paid for ticket for Lebanon Valley Drag Day the following day where I was going to have the car at the track for the first time. I ended up taking my Formula and getting 13 runs in. What a waste for an extremely consistent 15 second automatic car. Ah well. The only thing left besides the engine itself is the rear...knock on wood...

I'll take it off your hands if you're really too stressed about it. I'd even let you have my '97 WS6.
