Rebuild or replace, THAT is the question

Welp, my rear has been going for a while now. It's gotten to the point where I can't hear my exhaust over the whine. Needless to say, it's really annoying.
I wanted to replace it with a 12-bolt, but the funds are really readily available, as my transmission needs rebuilt as well.
So here's the choice rebuild the rear and the transmission. How much would just a rebuild run?
Or get the Moser and hope the transmission holds up. Opinons? -- Dave

depends on whats wrong. Wasn't there an incident with damage to the rear? If you rebuild it and it's a bent axle or untrue axle tube, it will just do it again. A gear set isn't probably going to do that on an 02 unless you beat the living hell out of it. -- Owner of HBHRacing.com Xtreme performance products

Whats wrong with your transmission? I would say take care of the rear first and hope the transmission holds till you can fix that. Either way if one goes the car is going to be down no matter what. -- Dan

I thought so Harlan, we talked about this a while back. Had my guy take a look at it, the axles are true and the gears look okay, but there were some shavings in the pumpkin. Then it wasn't whining THAT loud, just noticable to car guys. Now everyone hears it, even my mother. Maybe now that it is louder I'll have him take another look at it.
The transmission needs rebuilt. Syncros for 3rd and 4th are almost if not completely shot and the 4th gear fork is bent.(I avoid 4th gear now because it always pops out)
EDIT: Oh, and no real damage to the rear that I know of, could have been the previous owner though. I did FUBAR the tranny though, powershifted 3 to 4 and jammed it in good. I had to pull over, turn off the car and man handle it out of gear. -- Dave '02 M6 WS6

You did FUBAR your tranny!
Can you afford to replace the rear with a 12 bolt and rebuild the tranny? --

Not easily, or without going into a huge amount of debt. The 12 bolt will run about 3k after install and everything. Rebuilding the driveline will run about 2k. 2k i can do, can't do the other thousand without going into more debt. -- Dave

Well, the way I see it: if it's your daily driver, then do what you gotta do. Sell it or fix it. Or fix it and give it to me. --

I haven't had that much trouble with my '96, and I've had it since new. If that car is stock with those problems, being that new, I'd get rid of it. Seems like modifying these cars really screws up their reliablity. To me, it's unbelievable the amount of money some people sink into these things. -- 1996 Z28 A4, 3.23 gear, leather, No T-Tops,

Well...selling it isn't an option. It's not going to self destruct, just needs some upgrades. And these things are the only things wrong with the car. The engine runs likes a horse, no piston slap, no oil consumption, nothing. It's just everything behind it is junk. It also hasn't gotten anywhere near to the point of parts to value of car (Putting more money into parts than the car is worth). -- Dave

Aren't they based in TX? I've heard great things about them, but I can't afford to have my car down for a couple weeks while we ship the tranny back and forth. This car is my DD. I will remember that Leo, thanks! -- Dave
