help!! secondary air system removal

Posted By: blackhawk400 On: 01-02-2008 @ 11:09:38         Reply | Edit
i had heard that some people were removing the secondary air system pump from their ls1's and i thought id give it a go. so i removed it and the engine did feel a little better...ok so not much. i also removed the egr, and put block off plates on all 4 holes. but anyways, it ran fine for about a month, with the ses light on. now it is starting to putt a little after the car warms up. i put the egr back on and that fixed it for a while, with no codes as well. then it started again.

so at work one of my buds looked up the "air" system on Mitchell Repair. it says

"air injection system helps reduce hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, and oxides of nitrogen exhaust emissions by injecting air into the exhaust system. the induction of additional air promotes further oxidation (combustion) of unburned and partially burned exhaust gasses. during cold engine operation, air is injected into exhaust manifold. this quickly warms up catalytic converter and oxygen sensor. when vehicle warms up, air is diverted to atmosphere or to the catalytic converter."

blah blah blah, theres more but its just an expanation of a check valve and a pump.

ok, so now either o2 sensor 2 in bank 1 is malfunctioning, or the cat in bank 1 isnt working.

could this be why the car is stuttering?

any help?

first off, there is zero performance gain by removing the AIR and EGR systems. As long as you did it correctly, it's also not going to cause a problem other then codes being set.

Secondly. You need to see if it's throwing any codes besides AIR system and egr and start your analysis there.

the only code thats come up besides he air and egr is the "bank 1 sensor 2 O2" code im not sure if its just the sensor going out or the cat clogged up.

my question is whether or not it had anything to do with removing the air and egr.

what was the actual code number?

And no, 02 sensor codes will not set because of that, air system faults will.

ive cleared all the codes numerous times at work, but here are the ones that are up now
p0401
p0410
p1415

there were two others but i lost the paper i wrote them on. one was p1416 i think, and the other was for the 2nd o2 sensor in bank 1

P0401 is inconsequential due to the removal of the EGR
P0410 is inconsequential do to removal of the AIR system.
P0415 same as above, P0416 same as above.

The one that's needed is the one you don't have. No way to correctly diagnose the issue until you have the right code number.
