Took the G8 to the track today.

Posted By: RedScreaminMachine On: 11-20-2009 @ 18:15:44         Reply | Edit
I got my G8 to the track today. Approximately 750 miles on it when I got there. Very nice day, around 50 degrees, little wind. I made 3 passes which looked like this:

1: I decided to leave it in D for the first pass. I did a very brief spin of the tires to clean them and lined it up. I stalled it to about 900 rpm and hit it on the last yellow.
60'......2.17
330'....5.83
1/8.....8.88
mph....81.38
1000'..11.49
1/4.....13.68
mph....102.15

The car seemed to be shifting into 4th as I was crossing the finish (stock shifts are lazy).

2: I started in sport shift mode and tried the 3rd gear trick. Same on the burnout as the first pass. I left off idle. When I hit the gas it felt like it spun a little and the pass looked like this.
60'......2.13
330'....5.84
1/8.....8.92
mph....80.79
1000'..11.54
1/4.....13.74
mph....102.68

The car stayed in 3rd when I requested it to shift back to second (the trick to keep it from shifting to 4th as it crosses the finish). It stayed in 3rd and my mph picked up slightly, but my ET was a tiny bit off.

Last run I did a 2 second burnout and staged. I used the 3rd gear trick like on the second pass. I left off idle and it seemed like it spun more this time.
60'......2.04
330'....5.72
1/8.....8.76
mph....81.88
1000'..11.35
1/4.....13.529
mph....102.92

I weighed the car after the last run and it was 3990 lbs without me and the race weight was 4180lbs.

Overall I was very impressed with the car. Very fun day and I can honestly say that the car is a mid 13 second car. It might be a while before the mods start, but now I have a baseline to work off of.

It's when you manually try to shift into 2nd gear after hitting 3rd so that it stays in 3rd and doesn't shift 4th right before crossing the finish.

As soon as you hit 3rd? Or after it's been wound out and youre approaching 4th?

I waited until I was nearing 4th, but it won't matter. Once it shifts into 3rd it won't let you back into 2nd until you slow down.

Why's that? I let it shift itself until 3rd and then I just keep it from shifting into 4th.

Yea, I guess thats what I was trying to get at. I was just wondering if keeping it 3rd would actually lead to a better trap speed or not, but it sounds like it isn't much of a difference, especially with the gears that your car has.

For me it made over 1/2 a mph difference. Some cars have gone from 101 to 103-104 by doing it. All depends on the car and the conditions at the time/place.

Even at only 1/2 a mph though, that's about the same as a 5 hp gain for free.

Thanks! Yeah, it isn't light, but being a 4 door sedan it isn't supposed to be. The GT500 and Challenger have no excuse, however.

Sweet Car. If you supercharge that you can get 550hp. who cares about mpg?

LOL, I can't say that MPG is the biggest concern on my list

I'm probably not going to go as far as supercharging it (at least not for a long while), but I do want to start with some basic bolt-on this year. Should run 12's with only minor mods. Before I start on the G8 though, I'm gonna get my LT1 to beat it, lol.

Yeah, my dad has a 2004 GTO and I absolutely love it, but even he thinks that the G8 is the better car. More room, better looks, pretty much equivelant performance, etc.

Ron, why is your lt1 listed for sale at the top but your 2nd to last post says your going to mod the z28 some more to beat the g8? I may have a treat for you in a couple days. We'll see what happens.

Actually, I sold my LT1, but my brouther bought it, so it's cool. We got a CAI, catback, 3.42 gears, airfoil, 1LE elbow, and Nittos on it and he got it to run 13.54 @ 100.84mph with a 1.96 60ft on a real good day (weather wise). The two cars are real close from a dig now, but from a roll I still pull on the LT1 once it gets into 3rd gear. We have more planned for it over the winter to hopefully hit a low 13 or maybe even a high 12 with bolt-ons.
