Stock LT1 vs Acrua TL

Nothing crazy here. My brother has been driving a 2005 TL and has been bugging me for a race against my LT1 for a while (see my sig). I guess the TL is rated 276 hp and weighs about the same so he figured it'd be a good race. His prediction was that he might be able to pull me from a roll, but I'd win from a dig due to his FWD. I educated him on power under the curve.

1st race was from a 55 mph roll. Not the best spot for me, but what the heck. 3 honks and we hit it. It was even for a second and then I started pulling. He said that I had about 2 cars on him by 100 mph and was still pulling away.

2nd race was from a dig. We ran a marked off 1/4 mile. 3 honks and he spun slightly and then hooked and I just hooked (not quite full throttle off the line). It was again even for a couple seconds and then I started pulling pretty good. He said that I had at least 3 cars (maybe more) by the 1/4 mile and that I was still pulling away.

I explained that just because the peak power numbers are close doesn't mean the cars will run the same. Very fun races, even if the cars are both slow.

Not to be a complete noob, but can you explain that a bit? Like the power curve? basically saying whether its at 3000 rpms or 5k?

The faster the car makes hp/tq, and how long it holds it out. The faster the car will be

Here's a Supra Dyno sheet:

Here's an LS1 Dyno sheet:

The Supra may have 660 hp, but it doesn't make a darn thing until 4000 RPM. While the less powerful LS1 is already making 350hp and 400tq. By the time the Supra hits its powerband, the LS1 will be way out front because it made it's power so much earlier.

This is also why 600hp Supra's run 12's....

Yeah, basically my car and the Acura make the same power at the peak. However, if you look at the power they are both making before peak, the LT1 makes more. That means that the LT1 will be pulling harder earlier and will be ahead when the Acura is finally makes it's peak power. Then, when they shift the LT1 will be making more once again.

So basically from a dig, LT1 will smoke but highway would be much closer i'd assume?

It all depends on what the curves look like compared to each other. Since the motors operate at different RPM, you have to look at the gearing, the mph at which the race is started, and the gear that each car starts in. In this case, it didn't matter. The Acura only made the same peak, but was down on power everywhere else, so no matter where we started the LT1 pulled.
