Stock LT1 vs. Cammed Notchback

Well, I got a couple real good runs in with my stock 1994 against my buddy's 1992 notchback stang. My car is stock with an auto and 2.73's.

Previously I've raced the same buddy's 1986 GT. That car had 5-speed, Flowmaster exhaust, K&N drop in, and 3.55 gears. We raced from a dig to about 70-80 mph. I beat him by about 1.5-2 cars. He then removed the air resonator and bumped the timing and we tried again. From a dig again but this time to 100 mph I won by about 2 cars.

After that I raced another friend's LX with a 5-speed, bolt-ons, and a very streetable heads and cam package. He has no idea how much power it makes though. We went from a 1st gear roll. He spun and I jumped out pretty good. By about 70-80 mph he came past me pretty good. He claimed to have missed second, which I have no way of confirming or denying. I pretty much figured that it would turn out like that since a decent heads/cam package males about 280 rwhp giving him a 50 rwhp advantage on me, and probably a weight advantage too (he had a passenger and I was alone, so I'm not sure).

Enter tonight's showdown. My first buddy has a 1992 notchback 5-speed. The car had 3.90 rear gears, long tube headers, cold air with intake, exhaust with dumps, and a cam. He also realized tonight that he has the stock timing, so I'm sure that doesn't help. I figure this car is right between the other two I raced so it'd be pretty good.

The first run was from a 30 mph roll. We lined up and I honked it off. I jumped out about a 1/2 car, but then it looked like he was pulling back. Once he shifted I jumped back my 1/2 car in front. Again he pulled back, almost even with me, but on the shift I got me 1/2 car back. It again looked like he might catch me, but around 95 mph it looked like I was gonna creep away. I shut down at about 100mph. It was an awesome race and I told him that with some better shifting I think he would have taken it.

The second run was from a dig. We lined up and I honked it off. I mashed it and took off without spinning and he launched real easy, so as not to spin. We were dead even for a second and then he pulled a 1/2 car on me. At about 45 mph my car shifted 2nd and I though I might pull back, but it stayed there until about 85-90 mph where he started pulling away (my car shifts into 3rd right around there). We passed the 1/4 mile marker with him almost exactly one car in front of me. Once again an awesome race! I told him that with some drag radials I think he'd run a 13.5-13.8 based on what I ran with my car (14.3 @ 98 mph).

Sometimes it doesn't take high horsepower cars to have a good time, just some well matched competition.

That's what it's all about, good competition. Have you considered doing some exhaust mods to you Z28? In a race that close, it could give you the edge.
