Heads/Cam 5.0 vs. Stock LT1

Posted By: RedScreaminMachine On: 11-21-2008 @ 07:49:24         Reply | Edit
I was out cruising with a few friends yesterday and I was trying to line up against my friend's mild bolt-on 2002 GT, but it wasn't in the cards (it will happen as we're both up for it). I ended up lining up against my friend's 5.0 LX hatch. The car is a 5-speed with a heads/cam package. Nothing crazy, but much more power than stock (never dynoed, but it runs with or just ahead of my other friend's stock LS1 SS).

We lined up at about 30 mph and I honked it off (he had one passenger). We punched it and he spun a bit and I pulled away pretty hard. He said that he bobbled second gear, but around 80 mph he walked past me. He didn't destroy me, but there was no question that he was pulling harder. Probably had about a car on me by 100 mph.

It was a good race. A loss so it's incentive to mod, but close enough so it's not discouraging. Afterword he told me that he never raced an LT1 was was suprised at how hard my car pulled.

Look at it this way...it took heads/cam to get him where he is...similar mods for you would murder him

Yeah, I figured I'd lose, but where's the fun in racing if you only take races where you know you'll win.

But, the LT1 has 48 more cubes... so at least let him make a 347 stroker.

On another note, sounds like a well put together 5.0. I'd say some 3.73's/4.10's along with headers and true duals would wake that LT1 up.

LOL, if you're gonna give him the 347 stroker then he has to put the stock heads and cam back in it.

It has 48 more cubes because it weighs at least 480 more lbs. Stop making excuses for the 5.0. There's plenty of 302's out there that run very strong that dont use the cubic inch excuse.

Yeah, he's kicking himself now for selling it. It wasn't in mint condition, but it was decent and ran hard. he use to drive it on ET streets and spray it with a 150 shot. I never saw him lose a race with it, even to cars with much higher horsepower. Just a well setup street racer.
