New Best yesterday!

Posted By: RedScreaminMachine On: 11-20-2009 @ 11:15:36         Reply | Edit
Went to a track rental day yesterday. My brother went as well with his 2002 Z28 and I took my 02 Z28. The cars are almost dead even whenever we race. I was able to beat him, but he got a new clutch and transmission, along with a new tune and that fixed a few problems and brought his car up to the level where mine is. His previous best was a 12.4 @ 116 mph spinning horribly on Nittos. My best 2 years ago was a 11.997 @ 117.8 mph with Nittos that I've always run on. I haven't been able to match that time again since then (even though I've probably gone like 10 times and gotten numerous 12.0's). Well, just to try and clinch the win my brother stopped screwing around and bought some MT ET Street slicks. The showdown was yesterday.

We each took a few passes with both of us getting some low 12's. Then we lined up against each other.

The lights came down and we were off. I got a better reaction time, but he 60 footed the crap out of me and took a 1 car lead. I was slowly creaping back on him, but was unable to catch him and crossed the line with him a 1/2 car ahead and me running a 12.248 @ 116.48 to his 12.034 @ 115.76. He ended up taking the win by .076 seconds.

The next run we lined up and again I got the better reaction and a much better 60' than last time, but he got a 1.69 60'! I was able to take a 1/2 car lead and he wasn't able to catch me. We crossed the finish line with me a 1/2 car ahead, running a 12.148 @ 115.97 to his new best of an 11.994 @ 116.01. I took the win by .073 seconds. We were 1 for 1, but he had beaten my best ever time by .003 seconds. Lets just say that he didn't wasn't going to let me forget that. Seeing as how I'd never beaten it in 2 years, he figured he was golden.

My next pass was against a GT500 vert. The car had been running low 12's all day so I figured it'd be a good run. We took off and he got a slightly better reaction time, but my better 60' put me ahead. His car was making more power though and he was able to creep past me and win by about a car. I ran a new best though of an 11.987 @ 116.65 to his 11.919 @ 118.41. I definitely didn't feel bad when I talked to the owner and he told me that the car made 553 RWHP, lol. Lets just say that my brother wasn't too happy to find out my new best time, lol. He got to be king of the hill for approximately 31 minutes.

My next pass was a solo pass and I ran a new best again with an 11.963 @ 117.17 mph on a 1.82 60'.

My brother tried in vain to get the title back, but was unable to after running a string of 12.0's.

We lined up again and this time did something that we've always joked about doing. The light came down and we both started out very easy, getting up to a 10 mph roll. I looked over to make sure he was ready and then I gave it the old three honks and we both hit it. I ened up taking the win by about a 1/2 car, but we both ran almost identical mph with a 112.41 to his 112.54, showing how well the cars are matched. It was fun and we mostly did it as a joke after talking about "roll racing" at a track, lol.

We lined up one last time and the lights came down. We both spun, and got almost identical reaction times (which was worse for him since he was killing my in the first 60' all day). Also, I beat him on the reaction time by about a 1/2 second. I ended up running a 12.140 @ 116.03 to his 12.257 @ 115.77, taking the win by .616 seconds and a solid victory.

It was definitely a very cool day and I was happy to finally get a new best and then back it up with another 11 second pass on the next run. I'll allow myself to consider my car a legitimate 11 second street car. Also, My brother was able to cut a 1.69 60' on the first time to the track with those tires and was able to lift a wheel off the ground. After seeing that, a set of ET Street slicks will be making it onto my list of future mods.

Can't complain about an 11 second run. Plus you still have bragging rights over your bro too

LOL, yeah, it was funny the way it happened. I gotta get some more mods soon though. Too many cars out there trapping low 120's for my liking.

Yea, it's just sick how many viper's, vette's, and cobra's are trapping low 120's. I feel your pain though, especially trapping 109. Then again the car hasn't been to the track in four years..lol. Get yourself a pair of those mt et streets and that should help quite a bit. Have you thought about switching over to a set of weld pro stars? That should shed some more weight and deffinitly help with the weight transfer. You could always keep your other set of wheels/tires for the street.

I'm gonna get some ET street slicks like my brother had for my stock wheels and use them at the track. I just bought some chrome Torque Thrust M wheels for the street that I'm gonna put some Nittos on. I thought about some skinnies and slicks for the track, but I'm not liking the idea of grinding my brake calipers, and the Bogarts are uber expensive. Are there any others that will fit without grinding? If I got them then I could use them on both cars.

How's the car running? Is it on the road or still a "work in progress"? LOL Any good races lately? 109 is nothing to sneeze at, and just because there are super fast cars out there doesn't mean there aren't a whole ton of people who think their stock GT is the fastest car around

Your in luck: http://motownmuscle.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74524
I guess you dont have to grind the calipers or run spacers with these. Plus they are only $99.99. Is there a huge negative affect with grinding the calipers because I did mine a while ago Hopefully there isn't. If so, too late now. I dont have the car up and running. I bought some new guideplates to replace the combonation motorsport ones that were ligning the rockers up right. So now I have to readjust the rockers, put in new spark plugs and get some new oil in it. Then I'll fire it up. I still have to track down the vacuum leak and knock issue I was having.

Those wheels do look real nice. Aren't those spacers he has on the hubs though? Doesn't really matter, I wouldn't have a problem running spacers.

I don't think there are any major issues grinding the calipers. Just less of a cooling effect, and possibly some loss of strength so they may flex slightly.

Let us know when you get it up and running. It's been a while, you should be ready to terrorize the streets and go for a better time at the track!
