02 LS1 vs 02 GTP

I was on my way home from work tonight when a totally MINT looking GTP pulls up next to me at a light. When the light turned green he got on it and I tried to give it some gas, but just completely spun (h/c and street tires aren't a good combination in 30-35 degree weather), so I let off it part way through first. He slowed down so I caught up and rolled down the window. He asked what I had done, I told him heads and cam and he looked a little surprised (he probably thought I was on it at the light since he could probably hear my car). He followed me to the end of the road we were on where it turns to highway since the area we were in has a lot of cops around. He got next to me with no one around and we slowed it down to about 20-25 or so (I think I was at about 2500rpm in second, but first is useless so I figured I would just deal with it).
I waived for him to go and he got less than half a car on me when I punched it. When I hit a decent range, about 3500, the car went a little squirrely and revved out to about 4500-5000rpm, so I shifted to third right next to him (maybe a few feet ahead at the most). Once I hit third it was all over, maybe 2-3 cars by the end of third and quite a few more part way through fourth when I let off.
He followed me to a gas station where we talked for a bit. He was a really cool guy and his car not only looked awesome but sounded amazing (that supercharger whine made me want to scrap the N/A plans). He said the motor is from an 04 GTP since he did something bad to the stock one, but he said his mods were exhaust, a tuned PCM, and a 3.4 pulley. He hadn't had it dynoed or taken it to the track, but he said he was guessing around 300 or so whp. I don't know much about the GTPs so I have no idea if all of this is accurate, but the car was definitely no slouch. He said he's beaten a stock 350Z pretty good, so I'm guessing maybe a mid to low 13 second car depending on his driving???
Regardless, it was one of the nicest cars I have seen in a long time and it was a fun race since I was having traction problems. I'll have to see if I can get him a race with BlackScreaminMachine's mostly stock 02 Trans Am. That would probably be a great race.

i know a kid with a 01 grand am gt, with the gtp bottom end in it, and its cammed, basically fully built motor, pcm tune, all naturally asperated, it makes 270 whp and revs to 7 grand...its pretty damn quick...there are like 5 gtp's here at lincoln tech in indy, and most of them are stock, maybe one is modded, those cars have some potential...
and the traction thing sucks...this kid in a bonneville wanted to race me the other day, ok, i have dedicated snow tires, and it was a rainy day...there wasn't a snowballs chance in hell that i was gonna get traction in 1st or 2nd...it sucked, cuz the kid is a real dick and i wanted to show him what was what... --

Yeah those L67 and L32(2004+) bottom ends have NEVER been blown due to too much boost. People have run 18lbs+ on the stock block...just gotta stay on top of the tune. Nobody to date has ever cracked a block either..unless they were being dumb. -- 2005 GMC 1500HD 6.0L, dumped true duals - Flowmaster 50 series - 16.43@85.29

Awesome race! Some of those GTP's can be NASTY! Always good to meet someone who races that's cool to talk to.
Storn, I call BS. The Grand Prix (I'm assuming that's what you meant since I've never seen a Grand Am with swapped 3.8) NA dyno record is 247.5 whp. -- Red 2002 Camaro Z28

my buddy has the 3.8, like our cars, only with that plastic intake, cuz its fwd, and it has the gtp bottom end, new rockers (1.7 i think) valve springs, pushrods, lifters, cam, tune, 3inch exhaust, intake...he has put a lot of money into this car, probably 4-5 grand into the engine, and it is hella fast for as big as it is, granted its an automatic, its still hauls ass...
idk maybe the 270 was at the crank and not the wheels...but that is still 230 or so at the wheels... --

230whp is high, but believeable if he has good heads and a big cam, etc. I'm sure the car hauls ass. The Grand Prix's aren't that big though. Mine weighs slightly less than my Z28. -- Red 2002 Camaro Z28

The non supercharged fwd motors are exactly like the fbody 3.8s (L36)...of couse w/o the plastic intake. They dont have the gtp bottom end (L67 for pre 2004 cars or L32 for the 2004+)unless it is s/c'd from the factory. -- 2005 GMC 1500HD 6.0L, dumped true duals - Flowmaster 50 series - 16.43@85.29

I own a 2004 GTP and the car is not all that. See my sig pic and you can see it to the right of my TA. Took the GTP to the track and it ran a 15.4 They ride nice and are comfortable to drive but they are not that fast. Mine is stock. Just my 2 cents. --

The 2004+ GTP's are slower and ugly when compared to the 2003 and prior ones. -- Red 2002 Camaro Z28

..you must live in high altitude or something because the guys I have talked to run 15.50s - 15.60's in the regular 3.8 GPs. (I need to run mine ) You 04 is actually the start of the L32 which is a badass motor. If you arent in the mid 14s then something is wrong with the car, driver, or altitude.
The 04+ are not slower, in fact they have 260hp...as opposed to the 240 the previous years had. -- 2005 GMC 1500HD 6.0L, dumped true duals - Flowmaster 50 series - 16.43@85.29 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix - L36 - bone stock

Definitely right on the NA GP's running well. Mine ran a 15.58 @ 87 mph bone stock. As for the newer ones being faster, that's not really true. They are rated a bit more power, but in order to keep the transmissions from self destructing, they had to tune down the shifts to the point that the cars aren't any faster. They seem pretty close to the older ones, but from what I've seen they are a tenth or two slower on average. -- Red 2002 Camaro Z28

As for driving, It's a front wheel drive car. Kind of hard not to get traction. I haven't had any issues with the car. It has run the same since I have bought it. Car and driver times are about dead on with my times. I don't know. The car has 260 hp and 280 torque. --

I had an 04 Impala SS with pems (ported/polished/coated stock manifolds), 3.2 pulley, self tuned with dhp, 3" downpipe, magnaflow catback, autolite 104's, methanol injection, stb, cai, no cat, and I am sure a few other things I can't think of right now.
The impalas 04 & 05 were the only years the impala got the sc motor and it was the l67. The l67 impala's were tha fastest of all the l67 cars mainly due to a full aluminum cradle. Huge weight advantage over gtps. Which was freakin sweet looking compared to a gtp underneith.
Anyway I was running 104 mph in the 1/4 don't remeber the time. And for me traction sucked even with the 17's and decent tires. I spun through the 60ft with that car. In first doing a 30 punch it would easily break loose. I ran with stock ws6 ls1's all day and could beat ls1's till about 120-130. Raced a tuned turbo civic a guy had driven it back from Ca. and smoked his ass big time. He couldn't believe it. I told him what all was done to the car and he just shook his head. It was a definit sleeper.
Decided to demod it and sale after the tranny slipped one nite allowing the car to overrev and blew chunks out of the front 3 pistons (1,3,5). The chunks took out part of each spark plug. Demodded it and drove it for 3 months while trying to talk dealer into replacing motor which they finally did and the i sold it.

notice the flat wing, the 17's and the bumper filler those are the signs of it being a SS besides it having the same lt1 impala SS emblems on the doors and dual exhaust with chrome tips. Now that being said the lt's had a flat wing option and dual exhaust. The SS's also had carbon fiber trimmed interior and SS stiched into the doors. The other impalas had 16's but there is a 16" rim thats exactly the same. Oh and I made the car run that quick with $1800...All that was left was rockers for another $500 and i would have been in the 12's or 13 flats...
there are several of these running around the us running low 12 and a guy in michigan running 11's...They only mad like 10k all together and I have seen maybe 4 on the highway outside of the Impala GTG we had 2 years ago and we had 4 then.
