Wonderin what my new car would do....

Posted By: 13SEC94LT1 On: 03-10-2010 @ 14:50:35         Reply | Edit
Just bought a 98 Mustang Cobra convertable(still own my 94 Z28), 4.6 305 horsepower 5 speed triple black. Wondering what the thing will do in the quarter.

Anyone ever run against a stock Cobra? My girlfriend wants to line up with me in my Z28 (A4 bolt-ons)and run eachother. The Cobra feels about as quick, guessing high 13's (till I buy a Kenne Bell). Gonna have to journey to the Drag strip and find out, just curious what to expect. BTW, the Mustang is cherry, 50K and totally mint owned by an older guy and babied.

Hah, yeah but I wouldn't expect high 13s, I'd say somewhere in the lower 14s. Just go find out though.

I'm gonna say a low 14. They are about even with an LT1 fro what I remember. . . perhaps a bit quicker. I remember reading that the coupes could run a 13.8 with a good driver, but the 'vert is adding several hundred pounds.

You have to remember that a 4.6 DOHC is going to feel faster because it revs faster. . . so I'd say your LT1 will probably win out.

Now toss in some mods, and it becomes fun

Normally they are good for high 13's with a good driver, but you may be stuck in the low 14's due to the weight of being a vert. To the people talking about 15's, this is a 98 Cobra, not a GT.

Either way, it sounds like you have a real nice car there, let us know how it runs, and which car wins the race!

As for people who have raced one before, I raced one when I had my 1994 TA A4 (mine was all stock, but he may have had one or two little things, I'm not sure). We went from a 50mph roll and he was able to pull me a little. I think if my car had been a stick, or if we had gone from a stop then it would have been neck and neck. Later on after I had most of the bolt-ons, including full exhaust, I raced another one on the highway and pulled him decently. Should be fun either way!

Sounds like my LT1 will likely walk my Cobra seeing as how I ran a 13.7 in the Camaro before I did 3.73 gears. Will see what the 4.6 can do whenever I get descent weather to journey to the strip, supposed to be nice out this weekend so probably then.

Sort of enjoying the Mustang rite now where it is completely stock and quiet and user friendly. The moment I do any sort of forced induction the 4 catylitic converters will have to go, then I can say good bye to that quiet comfortable stock exhaust (must be getting old at 23 years of age)

I now see why my girlfriend agreed the Cobra was a great idea, she is asking more and more to use the Camaro. Wish I could put some sort of restrictor plate on it now so I could feel better letting her take it out.

my buddy's got a 96 cobra convert. He's got a catback and a s-trim vortech @8psi and put down 400rwhp. Cobras have great potential with forced induction...
