Well, today was my first day at the track, I have a 80 camaro w/400sb and a tci 350 turbo, using 3.73 gears and hoosier 26x9x15's I ran a 8.42 was my best (1/8th mile track here). not too bad for a full bodied car with full interior and power windows, and I drove it there, swapped the slicks, then drove it back home. But I have found some problem areas, first I need more converter, right now I'm stalling at about 2600 rpms, it launches hard, but it kinda takes it a split second to get riled up. also I need to change gears, I need more to carry this car down the track, I shift 1-2 at 5400 and pass through the traps at 5500 in second, never hit third. 60' ft times were mostly around 1.7xx and I was finishing with speeds of around 79-82 mph. I want the car to do 7.9 with the same motor. would pulling the backseat, ditching the hood, swapping to 4.56's and changine the stall get me .5 a second off my e/t? I'm kinda tight for funds right now. but asap I want a fiberglass hood and racing seats. any help or advice would be greatly appreiceated, thanks. -- 1980 Camaro-400sb, tci 350 turbo, 3.73's 8.42

the weight reduction would help but it would have to be a good amount of weight. Now the gears, unless you run a bigger diameter tire, such as a 28", the 4.56's would hurt you more then help so consider something like 4.10's/4.11's, another aspect you could look at is rims,? what kind do you have now? , also , what cam do you have in it , you might need a higher stall converter

I am using cragar s/s wheels. the cam is a comp cams XE284, the torque converter is a b&m holeshot 3000, but the car is so damn heavy it only stalls around 2600. Last night I pulled all the seats and interior panels, got two of those summit racing buckets. and I am going to look at a fiberglass hood today, and the power windows are coming out. -- 1980 Camaro-400sb, tci 350 turbo, 3.73's 8.42

Buffalo Valley-aka Mid Tn dragway near cookeville, about 15 mins from my house, my 60 ft. times were anywhere from 1.6xx to 1.7xx on a 60 degree day -- 1980 Camaro-400sb, tci 350 turbo, 3.73's 8.42

well the converter is going to cost a lil too much, would just removing the heavy steel hood, swapping the gears, and pulling the backseat, and relocating the battery to the back in the trunk be enough to get me to 7.9? I also currently use a edelbrock 750 carb and a dude at the track said swapping to a holley double pumper 600 would do a little better. My motor has splayed main caps, forged scat crank, pinkland rods, and srp forged 10:1 flattops w/one-peice rings, I have been thinking of a 150hp nitrous set up but I am worried about reliability and that stuff, how much time could I expect to drop on n2o? and would you recommend it? -- 1980 Camaro-400sb, tci 350 turbo, 3.73's 8.42

well, first off dont touch the carb, a 600 would choke that engine, i doubt the weight reduction would be good enough to go from 8.4 to 7.9 probably enough to go to 8.-8.3, now the nitrous, if your not going to spray all the time, only when you run it on the track, itll hold, what you would need to do is run a colder plug and back the timing down a little bit as to not cause detonation, also practice your 60 foot times, with the 150 shot you could be looking at as low as a 7.6 -- If you can drive it to the supermarket and back without having to tear down the motor, it's a street car

I have also been looking at junkyard parts and I believe I could build a big single/small twins turbo setup for a fair price, I have some expierance with turbo'd rx7's so this shouldnt be too hard, but running 10:1 comp. I cuold only use what 4-6lbs of boost on 93 octane and around 12 on 114? this should make a 7 second car if I boost it any thoughts? or should I just spend 400 bux and buy a NOS cheater system. -- 1980 Camaro-400sb, tci 350 turbo, 3.73's 8.42

id be a little leary still running that comp ratio with boost, but you could pull the heads and run a thicker head gasket to lower the comp ratio, as for which one to use, thats totally up to you -- If you can drive it to the supermarket and back without having to tear down the motor, it's a street car

Your 60 ft time has 7.90 written all over it. I'd try a 4.10 or a 4.30 gear. I run a 406 with a glide and I have a 4.56 gear with 28x10.5 tires. A glass hood would help too. but not like you'd think. every 100 lbs. dropped = .10 quicker theoretically.
