I am new to the forms and am about to purchase a 1995 228 with the Lt1 engine. I was wondering if there is any way to race these with out using drag radials and lifting the front end off the ground. I know you could obviously take it easy in first but I want to be able to take off from the line with out using drag radials. I am also new to rear wheel drive cars, I simply have never driven one before.

Point the car in a straight line, feather the clutch out at 2200 RPM. I would leave it at that. If you are new to RWD, just start out slow and do not try to be a race car driver. Baby steps

Thanks. I am not trying to be a race car driver. I just want to know what I am doing before I try to do something really stupid. I was wondering if there are any after market solutions (ie: suspension set ups) that could also help.

You are trying to get off the line without lifting the front end right? You just want a nice launch, correct?
(You won't be able to lift the front end on drag radials without a lot of money/time/power.)

you need the front to lift a bit to transfer the weight to the rear wheels for better traction, but theres a point when you lift to much the perfect setting would be just before to about 2 inches off the ground because you loose e/t time if you keep em up

Correct. I want to be able to just get a nice launch with out doing anything stupid or killing myself. If I could find a set of street tires that would work that would be great. [ Edited on 12/12/2005 @ 02:33:17 ] [ Edited on 12/12/2005 @ 02:34:19 ]

dont worry the front wheels dont come up very easily... it takes a whole lot of power and suspension to come anywhere near a wheelie...
besides, spinning out and fishtailing is much more of a concern... -- 1992 nissan 240sx. 2.4L, dohc, 5 speed, limited slip dif! ... budget project car

I ran drag radials on the street for 2 years, now I run the road race counterpart, the 555R2. If you only drive the car in summer, DR's are the way to go, or DR's in the summer, and two junk rims with Blizzaks on them for the rear in winter.

Thanks. The car I am purchasing is coming with an extra set of "junk" rims. So I was already planning on throwing snow tires on those and using something better suited for summer on the good ones. How do the drag radials hold up? Should I expect more wear on them then regular tires? This car also has lift bars on it, should I take them off or leave them on? I plan on using it as a daily driver.

what kind of car and how so lift bars? as for tires dont ask me i only run street slicks if u can get the car to pull the wheels up it has some good hook so fishtailing isnt as much of a concern, but one thing if the wheels ever do come up DO NOT move your arms any slight change in the front wheel alighment can make for a bad landing trust me it almost happened when i did it -- SPEED KILLS! It is a 95 camaro z28 with the lt1 engine. The guy selling it has "lift bars" on it, a custom exhaust and cold air intake. Thats all the mods. I test drove it and it was wonderful. I am just affraid of how it might handle if I decide to take it to a drag strip or if i push it a little too hard cornering or something like that.

With just those mods you won't be lifting the front end on that car, get some DR's and launch her hard and you'll be fine. --

Thanks for the info. What about general handling? anyone have any advice? Will the drag radials only be good for a straight line? or would they do ok for regular driving? I wouldn't want to take a turn and have the rear end slide.

Drag radials will be nice for straight line and ok for handling. If you drive like me, you will get a lot more miles out of the DR's then say a junk street tire. (I blew through 2 Eagle F1 GSC's in 1500 miles)
As for snow tires, Blizzak Ws-50's. The car should do pretty good with those.

One of these days I will buy a 4th gen and NOT run the miles up on it Like they say, 3rd time's a charm.
