well a buddy of mine just bought a 99 black trans am A4 almost identical to mine! its completely stock except for a flowmaster catback and 3.23's mines a 98 A4, air box cut out, coolant by pass, flowtech cut out 2.73's and the spare tire and jack removed the only thing that worries me is the gear cause i drove it and i can tell a really big difference compared to 2.73's especially in second gear but the thing is, that he doesnt know how to drive it, if he trys to mess around with me while were driving or something he leaves it in D the whole time.
So, taken when he actually learns how to drive it, taken every factor into consideration, who do u think will win, and by the way, i definately know how to drive mine -- 98 Black T/A A4 2.73 gears, air box cut out, descreened MAF, K&N filter, 3" FlowTech cut-out before the axle, pretty much stock for now,.. the car surgery will begin this summer...

Well if he is smart enough to leave it in Drive and let the computer do the work i'd say he already is one up on you. I have been told by more then one race shop that the A4 does not built correct presser when you shift it yourself. I don't understand why anyone would shift themselfs anyway.
It should be a good run. Some cars are faster then others. Take them to the track and find out. -- 94 Z28 M6, Cai, hooker catback, SLP fan switch, Lakewood LCA, Jegster Tq arm.

So you're saying your friend doesn't know how to drive it because he doesn't SHIFT an automatic...?

I would say your car is a tad faster but dont shift it yourself. Leave it in D for best results.
The only time manually shifting is of any use is when you lose traction. A4's with 2.73 gears dont lose traction on drive pavement.
Drag racing I have never lost traction , but during a brakestand it shifted to 2nd gear then bogged and my brakestand looked wussy. had i manually shifted i woulda been fine there. --

i did the same thing. I also put 7 rebuilt 700r4s in my GTA. In that car i needed to shift it because the shift points would not go over 5k rpms, but in your car it will shift perfect every time. -- 94 Z28 M6, Cai, hooker catback, SLP fan switch, Lakewood LCA, Jegster Tq arm.

Its funny when m6 guys say you can't really screw up driving a auto.... well the day my auto screws up when im driving, is the day I need a rebuild.
But what can still be screwed up with an auto or ANY car is the Launch. Even through stock, he can still blow the tires off and that can be the race. -- '94 Black Z28, 383 LT1 Breaking 11's SOON!

I dont know about other cars, but our auto's have perfect shift points stock. Which means you can only be slower by doing it yourself-- leaving it in D also rules out the ability to hit the rev limiter. --

agreed BSM, I didn't mean to sound like an M6 driving ass. The launch is the most important part of the run and can make or break you.
I was more saying that you can't screw up shift points in an A4, i should have been more clear. -- Dave

What about my 93. with the 700r4. It seems to shift way to soon when I leave it in drive. but when I manually shift it seems to pull much better. would that be hurting my trans. It dosen't seem to have the higher shift points... --

try to agust it. I could never get my GTA to shift high enough. I think my problem was more of less the ppl i had build it the last two times. -- 94 Z28 M6, Cai, hooker catback, SLP fan switch, Lakewood LCA, Jegster Tq arm.

Red Screamin's 93 has the same issues, but you can mess with the tranny cable to get the points higher, but often with those 4L60's and other 700r4's you need to crack the case and have the shift points raised.
Kinda sucks compared to 4L60e trannies where you can do it via the PCM. -- '94 Black Z28, 383 LT1 Breaking 11's SOON!

yeah a modern electronic controlled auto box should be fine in D, provided you don't light up the rears then lift off a bit as it will then shift up a gear and you will not go as quick, of course it may shift back down again, but this all takes time. I guess a could compromise would be hold it in 1st and once rolling move it to 2nd or D, this way the box will still shift when its ready with no input from you, but it means you can control any wheel spin better should it occur.
However you have to manually shift my old GM400 box in my XJS, if you leave it in D even with the throttle pedal welded to the floor it will shift up far to early, like 2000-2500rpm to early. --
