ls1vs lt1

Posted By: 97Lt1TA On: 03-14-2010 @ 14:25:02         Reply | Edit
i own my car for 3 months now wen i bought it only had the y pipe wiht the 3 inch pipe to the stock exhuast. i put in a 160 thermostat and a hypertech air foil in it too. well one night my freind from school that has a wrx told me he will set up a race for me so he called a guy from his work to come by. it turned out to be a 99 z28 6 speed. i knew i would lose cuz the guy had stick and more 305 hp vs mine 290 hp estimate back then wen i dindt have the thermostat and the air foil. the guy was joking around saying he will beat me and he was acting tough. so we pull up to the lights to race. the light turn green we both were peeling out thru the intersection untill i got grip and just took off and took him pretty bad. next run it seems like he shifted too soon so i won again. it was pretty funny listening to his excuses. everyone saw that this guy didnt no how to shift good and he got beat by a 17 yr old in his lt1 t/a ahhah

Stock 97 TA is rated at 285 at the crank which with an A4 your going to see around 18% drivetrain loss (give or take a percent or two) which comes out to 233.7hp with 18% drivetrain loss. You probably actually have around 250 at the wheels thats about what most guys see with LT's . The 3in y-pipe may be helping you a little but still is hitting a pinchpoint at the stock muffler so you may be getting 5hp if your lucky from that, the 160 thermostat also may help a little but if your fans aren't programmed to come on at a lower temp your not going to get its bennefits and an airfoil is worth maybe a horsepower or two. IF your lucky you've picked up about 5-7 horespower over stock. LS1's are known to dyno at 305 at the rear wheels sometimes even more your nowhere close to that number. So unless this guy was shifting at 3000 rpms and driving at half throttle I'm calling BS.

Good kill!

Yeah, most LS1's dyno 300+ at the wheels stock. That doesn't make them invincible though. A bad driver can lose any race no matter what he's driving. That's why I never back down from a race...there's always a chance of winning!

No offense, but "i knew i would lose cuz the guy had stick"... I HATE that statement. FBodies have EXCELLENT automatics, and that sentence sounds like something a ricer says. Congrats on the win, but when it comes to racing between FBodies, don't look down on the auto compared to the manual in a "Who'd win?" situation.

TransAm52804: YES!! Thank you. When I got my T/A, a buddy of a friend saw my car and walked over to it. He lost interest and thought my car sucked immediately when he saw the automatic shifter. To bad the mods under the hood easily make for car being automatic versus manual, plus it was a stock shifter connected to a TH-400 at the time. Looks can be deceiving and having an automatic is *not* a bad thing. Plus, now that I have LT1 Edit, I can make this box (4L60E nowadays) do just about whatever I want.

Ricers needs manuals because those things cannot afford to loose ~20% of their HP because they have nothing major to begin with. Plus, you need to dump the clutch at insane RPMs to get them moving. Automatics in those suck because stall is usually around 1800 and those turds make *no* torque at that RPM.

The you need a manual to be fast attitude is bullsh!t. Though, they are much more fun to drive. If I could have found a T56 T/A reasonably priced, I would have bought it. I thought 15K for a stock '95 T56 was a bit steep and that was all that was available 100 miles around me in mid-late '03.

I paid 5k for mine

Yeah the auto vs. manual is alotta bs with our cars. Assume two cars, one stick, the other manual - and they are pushing the exact same rwhp/tq numbers with same curve, have same tires/gears blah blah.

The auto will be MUCH more consistant. In this example all the auto driver has to do is put his foot to the floor, and at the worst he'll tie with the other driver, but won't lose.

The manual guy, unless he can powershift like a MOFO will probably end up slightly losing everytime.

The "stick or nothing" attitude is worthless and quite comical.

The only reason a STOCK manual car (i.e. a '94 T/A) is faster than the same car (94 T/A) with an automatic, is that manual cars have less drivetrain loss, and it puts more power to the ground.

Once you start modding, that goes out the window anyway.

And manuals are a beotch to drive in traffic.

they can be funner though.. but with a stall and gears an auto is every bit as fun. But with a stock stall it's a little boring.

Auto cars are not even close to being as fun as a m6. I have had this m6 car for 2 weeks. I ran a auto with a built 700r4 and a 3k stall for 4 years. Launching the auto was more fun. As far as anything after the launch the m6 owns. The feeling of control over the car kicks ass.

I totally agree. the manuals are faster.. but they require SKILL to drive. I saw a 2001 WS6 running 15.4's at the track. (trapping at like 107mph though.)

Congrats, now try that against my ls1 :-P
