ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (AP) — Scott Kalitta died Saturday when his Funny Car crashed and burst into flames during qualifying for the Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
State police confirmed that the 46-year-old Kalitta, a two-time Top Fuel champion who had 18 career victories, was killed in the accident.
Witnesses told The Star-Ledger of Newark that Kalitta's Toyota Solara was traveling at an estimated speed of 300 mph when the crash occurred.

Wow! That crash was insane!!! How sad. You'd expect a quick death over that though and at least he died doing something he loved. Doesn't even look like it was driver error. RIP

They certainly should, especially if they allow cars that go that fast!
I hope this loss will bring about change. --

They did have a sand trap. His chutes were burnt to a crisp. They did nothing to help slow him down. --

This tragic accident really hit home for me...
Occasionally, the base that I work on everyday sponsors events for DoD employees. Sometimes its a free movie night, other times its a golf outing or a barbeque by one of Picatinny Arsenal's lakes. On Wednesday at lunchtime, it was a Funny car display, where Scott Kalitta was on post to show off his DLH Toyota Solara Funny Car and have a meet and greet with any soldiers/government employees who wanted to see it.
Here is the email from my inbox:
DHL Funny Car Display! Start your engines!
Wednesday, 18 June @ Choices Parking Lot; B34.
11am – 2pm
Join us to see the 8,000-horsepower DHL Toyota Solara Funny Car and receive autographs and pictures with driver, Scott Kalitta.
Special BBQ Lunch for the event in choices parking lot.
Getting this email, I decided to check it out on my lunchbreak, and I went and got a picture of the car and Scott (who was a VERY nice guy and very eager to talk about the sport).
I was absolutely speechless when I saw this on the news, knowing that I had JUST seen this car and Scott himself, only 3 days before his death..
He leaves two young kids, 14 & 8 years old behind as well. So very, very sad...

I heard about this on the way back from picking up a shell for a future
race car. It made me think twice about the dangers and risks we all
face when we push the envelope.
Rest in peace.
