Help me with some interview questions

Posted By: RS31 On: 06-20-2008 @ 14:43:50         Reply | Edit
Ok so my neighbor is moving to seattle mid july for a new position at boeing (he claims it's the #2 spot, but who knows) and is a pretty hardcore business man. I am interviewing him on sunday about career success, education, and the whole works. I want to know the do's and dont's, regrets, everything that he has that could help me out. I have some questions I am going to ask him, but I'm sure I'm forgetting some. Give me some questions that you think would be important to ask for a situation such as this. Thanks

What has he learned from the successes and setbacks of "LEAN"?

How do you adapt to dramatic changes in the economy which have long-term negative effects on your end product, none of which are due to the product's perfomance?

Why is it that labor is the first to suffer (ie: lose jobs)when management lays an egg?

Looking back, were you ever forced to put business above family?

he's the VP of purchasing/materials management at NWA, so basically he just leaves

anything pertaining to clients?

Nick, you mean "lean" as in manufacturing lean or "lean" as in leaning out the company/staff?

These days, it isn't enough for a company merely to cut costs.

It needs to streamline processes while improving quality, becoming nimble while responding quickly to customer demand, and empowering employees while increasing profits.

Enter Lean, a concept that designs, manufactures, delivers and supports products more efficiently and at lower costs — while systematically identifying and eliminating waste — all the way through the product life cycle. It uses a "just-in-time" system that gives internal and external customers what they want, when they want it, and at the lowest possible cost.

At its root, Lean is about remaining competitive in a rapidly changing global marketplace. In order for Boeing to survive as an aerospace leader, continue winning new business across the enterprise, and create and sustain jobs, it constantly must find ways to make its products cost-competitive.

Oneowner, we have an internal saying within my company, "Stay in fighting shape." I never knew we were always striving for "lean."

wow, i did something right.

Ok that's what I thought you meant. We are hardcore six sigma at cummins (basically making all employees manage a project or two at some point). I'll hit on it, but it's pretty obvious that the answer is always about $$$

Ask him his favorite qualities in a subordinate, and his favorite qualities in a superior.

"it's pretty obvious that the answer is always about $$$"

I know. It's just fun to watch them squirm and have to admit it.

Well I talked to him a bit tonight. He isnt #2 at boeing... he's #4, which is still pretty high up there as far as I'm concerened. I'll interview him tomorrow.

great thing is he is leaving a lot of things behind so theres a lot of "things" to take from him.

btw he only has $63,500 to spend on a company car... so he was asking me if he should get a C63 AMG, lexus IS-F, or an Audi S5 (1 year waiting list). He wants an M3 (cuz he has one right now) but I think that might slightly be out of his budget (so he says).

I hope he can get me a job there.

63.5 is a nice down payment on a ZR-1 methinks.

Remind him that is really practical for business too. A car traveling at 200mph takes a quarter the time a car at 50mph does, so he can now spend 3/4 of his travel time still in the office. See? Flawless logic.
