Anyone have a big dog?

Posted By: 95ttoplt1 On: 06-15-2008 @ 21:33:05         Reply | Edit
My wife is wanting to get a dog, and we have settled on either a Great Dane or BullMastif.

Anyone have one of these? We have been around both and really like them and they seem to get along well with kids but are protective which is what we are looking for.

Any particular bloodline to look for or stay awya from with either?

Nothing to worry about.

It's more about how it's raised and trained than the bloodline, anyway. People (well, idiots) try to paint a bad picture for breeds like pitbulls or rotts, but they're some of the softest dogs I've seen around children.

Hell, from my experience (and I've been around dogs my entire life,) chihuahua's are the snippiest and most temperamental, size doesn't really count for shit. The one thing I'd say is to avoid a dalmation unless you've got experience in training, they can be a handful (but great if you get it right.)

Yeah she was talking about a Dalmation but I had heard that before(althoug Rob has a very nice one).

I found a really nice looking english mastiff that would be huge as well. I love those big thick dogs. No one will mess with the house or wife when one of those big guys hanging around

Anyone remember "Hooch"

I remember "Hooch" great movie...but that dog was way too slobbery.

Troy, I had a Great Dane and she was awesome, great protector, great with my young kids.

My daughter was just starting to walk and Tara (my dane) would lay by the steps and wouldn't let my daughter near them.
She would get between my two sons when they were fighting and not let them near each other.
My first husband was abusive and she would protect me from him, sometimes going after him.
She was very intuitive, I loved that dog!

A guy I work with has nothing but Bull Mastiffs. He just got a new one last year. They're great dogs if you train them right.
I also like the Akita idea, but again, definitely needs good training. My neighbor at my old house used to have one, and that thing was frightening. It was friendly, great with their kids. It would run up to me whenever I went over there and I'd be scared to death until it rubbed up against me wanting to be pet. Then it'd go get a tennis ball or sumthin. And hearing that thing barking at night when any people or animals came around made you want to stay inside.

It's not so much "training" as it is establishing boundries. You can still have an aggressive animal that knows how to heel and sit. Like most people said, certain breeds have to be handled differently but there are no "evil" dogs... just stupid or ignorant owners.

Pure bred dogs tend to have more genetic disorders than mutts, just a fact of how standardizing a breed encourages certain defects.

Mastiffs are great dogs. I dont have any experience with great danes other than seeing them when im walking my dog though.
Another breed to consider is a rhodesian ridgeback, bracco italiano, or something of the sort. Would probably end up being expensive though, foreign breeds.

The biggest dogs I have "owned" were my bosses english bulldogs. I take care of them every once in a while when he goes away. One weighs about 100lbs, the other weighs 80. It gets hard to control both of them, but they are very well behaved. Great around kids too.

Alaskan Malamute.

Huge, yet very nice and cuddly.

We had one in the shelter a few days back...176lbs but was as gentle as a teddy bear.(that's all in the raising of it though, like any dog) Oh yeah it wasn't a pure bred either, it had wolf in it...but still.

That thing was STRONG.

I've got a 120 pound lab, my friends kids pull her hair, tease her, ride her like a horse and she never does a thing. Mutts are also generally good with kids.

Hmmm... tricky choice. Both are great dogs. I've also known people with both and have had many direct contacts with both breeds.

I used to ride at a barn who was a partial rescue for great danes and has had about 4 or 5 since I've been riding there (I'm not anymore but I still go visit). Great dogs. Only one wasn't very trust worth but the rest have all been sucks and very friendly.

Bullmastiffs are great as well. I used to walk an english mastiff and she was a great dog as well. My celica... didn't like it so much. That dog took up half of my car (quite literally) when in it and slobbered all over the damn place. Cute as a button and super friendly though.

All of the dogs I've dealt with in those breeds have been great with kids as well.

For me if I was to pick between those two choices I'd go for the Great dane mainly because of the slobber. I can't stand dog slobber.

I think my wife share the same concerns. She is already cleaning up after two kids. Dog slobber just doesn't fit into the low maintaince gaurd dog thing.

We did find a Brazilian Mastif for sale locally, its 1 1/2 old femal, just over Knee high and 100lbs. But I guess they can be very aggressive towards stangers. She is going to check it out and see how that particular one is.

Thanks for all the input guys.

I'd be hesitant on getting anything other then a puppy. specially if you have kids. I'd want to know the dog was trained right, right from the begining and that I wasn't taking on someone elses problems. I guess I get that from my mom. My mom used to show and breed ESS.

Man, don't buy a dog. Such a waste.

Go to a shelter and find one for free, save it's life.

I agree with that guy.. Rescue a dog, it's much more rewarding, and free lol.

My roommate has a great dane and it's hugee. A tad over 180lbs currently. He's a sweety, but slobbers like crazy. Also, danes have a lot of health issues; major joint problems, problems with going blind before they're old, and they even have problems running... The roomie tells me that danes have a problem with their stomach wrapping around their esophagus when they run a lot which basically kills them.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

We have chekced the local pound and no luck yet.

We have had bad experieces with the rescue thing. Our last dog was a rescue. It was just a puppy when we got it but it was almost bald from the fleas.

We nursed he back to health but she had so many health problems that we could have bought two purebred healthy puppies for what we ha into that dog. She was a sweetheart but we are looking for a low maintance dog.

The rescue was too much for my wife to take care of while I was away and we ended up giving her away to some people that could devote more time to her. She had mange so bad that she needed two baths a day, and my wife had a new born and a 3 year old and was alone in a forign country. It just didn't work.

I have found a couple places online that have Great Danes ort the bigger dogs as recues, but they want 500-1000 for an adoption fee, and they want to come do a ahome study and make sure you "qualify" for the dog.

We ran into these cooks in Alaska and they had about 25 dogs at there house, all of which were sick(sneezing and running noses and gagging) living in the garage which was about 20 below zero. There place reeked of dog shit and looked like a junkyard yet they insisted on inspecting our home before we could adopt a dog. They came and looked at our house and said we couldn't have the dog as our yard was only 20x30 and they required atleast 50x50. I was pissed.

So I kinda have a bad taste in mouth over these Dog rescue places. I think half of them were better before the rescue home.

I wouldn't trust these rescue joints.. But a shelter or pound is good to go. My other roommate has a boxer that he got from a "rescuer" and that dog has had thousands of dollars in medical problems. Of course that doesn't really mean jack about rescuers' dogs, but whatev

If yoru looking for a big extremely loyal kid friendly gaurd dog, i would be looking into a German Shepard. Mine is about 16 weeks old and she wont let any stranger or animal onto my property and she is very friendly with friends and kids.

And of course i had to name her Blondi

That's what killed my Great Dane, she ran after eating.

Thats crazy about the Stomach thing. I have seen "bloat kits" and it seems to be common with all the breeds we are looking at. Kinda sucks, but maybe we can learn how to keep them away from the conditions that cause that.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. We are really looking for a shorthaired type dog as the hair thing is kinda nasty to me. We had a shorthaired dog before and it was manageable, untill the mange kicked in and it all fell out again.

I have thought about a Rottwiler as well but they don't seem to live very long(my brothers just died at 5 years) and might be a little hyper for an in the house dog, but they are badass.

Just for a tidbit, the shelter I work at is a no-kill shelter so they stay as long as they live or til they get adopted.

If you get a shelter dog, find one from a shelter that euthanizes them after so long being there. (THAT IS BULLSHIT BY THE WAY)
