Just kidding. Here is the scenario:
You are made president and can do three things to improve or save the US (they can be broad topics). What would you do and what is your rationale? (Canadians can play too!)
I would:
1. Split Iraq into 3 countries (Kurd, Shia, and Sunni). The Kurdish area would make an excellent base of operations so we could get out of Saudi territory. This would each government to operate according to their own beliefs and should slow the infighting as well as making it easier to patrol (patrol the borderlands and the oil fields and make their police step up).
2. Restructuring of social programs. Cut the hand outs and refocus the money on education, science, the arts, and technology. There is no reason that America is so far behind many other countries in education. There is also no reason that schools should have to slash after school sports and music to save a little cash. All of these seem to go hand in hand anyways, so it would be easy to provide some extra $ from the restructuring to step 3.
3. Large scale infrastructure improvements will provide plenty of jobs at all levels, from laborer all the way to engineers. The highway system in America is piss poor considering we have more cars than anyone else. We should not have to worry that we will lose a front tire every time we hit a pothole (read crater). Roads aren't the only thing that needs improvement however. There would be a program in place to start the production of more nuclear power plants which would replace the coal fired plants used today. Worried about terrorists? Build the reactor structures underground in reinforced containment structures. Continue moving towards the Gen IV (fast breeder) reactors which can be used to produce short half-life waste that won't take millennium to be safe --

this is just my take on your three points,
1: Give the people in Iraq the support they need in order to set up an effective government for themselves and let them decide what to do with thier land
2: ELIMINATE the social programs that support lazyness and the welfare state, give the money back to the people. Privatize the educational system and let the parents choose where to send thier kids to school, give the savings back to the people.Promote more competition in the healthcare industry and reduce government regulation in the insurance industry. The bottom line lower taxes and promote large scale growth.
3: as far as infrastructure, I agree that we need to take better care of our highways. I would build more nuclear power as well as promote the growth in clean burning coal plants. High on this list is the need to drill for our own oil and produce more refineries.
this is a very short quick list. -- John

we all got a long list of what should be done to save the country but we are a long ways from correcting the ship and make solid growth --

yes, but not everyones list would workk -- "The whole point of conservatism is to lift the downtrodden. The whole point of liberalism is to keep them suppressed and then lower the rich and punish achievement! It's so damned obvious."

I disagree with clean coal. "Clean coal" isn't really all that clean at all. Coal still releases far more radioactive particles than a nuclear facility and really only reduces their emissions of SOx, not the other pollutants. It would be an OK standby until we can get more nuclear reactors built, but far from an ideal solution. --
