Alienware is overpriced. If you're wanting a big gaming machine like that it's much cheaper to build it.
What do you use the computer for? The reason I ask is that a lot of people fall into the trap of buying way more machine than they'll ever use. A lot of nerds get emotionally attached to the box and post up benchmark numbers like they're showing pics of their kids. Look at it like a tool... the right tool for the job. If you're gaming a lot then by all means go all out, if all you're doing is surfing the web and watching youporn then just go buy a cheapy Dell for a few hundred bucks. -- 95 Formula 1 of 7,448

In that case build your own, and get a full tower case so you can have plenty of ventilation and put as much gear as you want into it.
Don't cheap out on cooling or the power supply either. -- 95 Formula 1 of 7,448

We picked up an Acer laptop in January. It's awesome for what it is. Has a 120 gig hd, 1 gig ram, DVD R/W drive, Nvidia graphics (they suck, still better than Intel's) and a AMD Processer. I think it was around 700 bucks.
Yeh, definitely build your own system. I've only owned one system I haven't built myself. That was my first one. After than It's been custom every time. --

laptop: Dell XPS. Just wait for a killer special, I got over $1000 off of what they were asking for my laptop and got 3 year accidental damage plan, 3 year on site service. 13.3" WS and I run a 22" WS external. You might want to go 15.4" and better video car for gaming though.
You could go mac, but its not going to be good for gaming. They are nice laptops though.
Desktop, always build your own if you are going high end way way better way to do it.
if you are going bottom of the barrel, it sometimes can be hard to beat a generic dell/gateway/whatever you want. -- http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2210351 94 Formula A4

same here. Build it yourself. Get a 500gig HDD (only $99 on newegg), get a 9800gtx (if you game a lot, this should last you a while) otherwise get the 9600gt or the 8800gt (both are really good cards and dont cost a lot of money). If you really have to cheap out DONT go below a 8800gs (I think they are about $100).
processor go with a Q6600 if you can find it under $200 otherwise the E8400/E8300(?)/E8200 are all more than enough.
vista 64 bit -> 4+ gigs of ram
vista 32 bit -> No more than 3 gigs
XP -> 3 gigs
buy a nice power supply (700W or so). spend about $100.
I like 22" monitors, they seem to be priced well. 19" used to be best bang for your buck, then it was 22"... might even be 24" now. --

I build systems for extra cash and can put an alienware computer to shame for half the money, def. build your own system. I usually go with dell for laptops, but always get the longest warranty you can, had a laptop for 3 1/2 years and it broke and they sent me a brand new one, can't beat that. -- 99 Black Z-28 "Stripper" M6, SS Ram Air Hood, Borla Cat-Back, J&M Strut Tower Brace, B&M Ripper Shifter, Whisper Lid, Tint (50% front, 35% rear) Pics @ http://www.fquick.com/3p0ch

24" is a huge jump up from the 22 in price, I think 22 is the best overall buy and it is very nicely sized. Dual monitors rock your socks. -- http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2210351 94 Formula A4

Last time I built a computer i used pricewatch.com to find me a bare bones computer. If you find a descent one on a good site they will let you configure what is in it. I found it was cheaper that way to get motherboard + memory + cpu for cheaper. --

I usually custom make them to each individuals specs. They give me a budget and tell me what kinds of things they want to be able to do, and how "future proof" they want to try to make it and I give them 3 or 4 different options and let them choose what they like best. I feel that the more you keep the person in the know and let them "help" the more they enjoy the finished product. If you would like to talk about the process more and everything that is involved send me an email, its on my profile -- 99 Black Z-28 "Stripper" M6, SS Ram Air Hood, Borla Cat-Back, J&M Strut Tower Brace, B&M Ripper Shifter, Whisper Lid, Tint (50% front, 35% rear) Pics @ http://www.fquick.com/3p0ch
