New apartment... need some advice on what new stuff to fill it with!

Posted By: BigMike On: 05-15-2008 @ 18:26:47         Reply | Edit
So as I posted in the TV post I made, I've just recently signed a lease on a new apartment which I'm extremely excited about. The issue is that I basically need to buy all new stuff. I know exactly what I want as far as furniture and all the basic stuff, so I'm moving in the right direction. What I really need is some ideas about what type of stuff would make it a really f*ckin awesome apartment. Basically, what type of stuff/toys/whatever would you guys have in your ideal "single guys pad?" Any cool/interesting ideas are welcome!

dont make it look like a college apartment or dorm. Women tend to see that as a bit immature (or so i've noticed at least)

so let me get this straight... you might buy a newer car, you bought a big screen tv, and now you're going to furnish an apartment? What kind of fertilizer are you using on your money tree?

Invest in the most expensive mattress and sheets you can afford.

Not only will you get to enjoy them every night, but the ladies will show their appreciation as well. To some it is better than drugs.

Keep it lit well, vs. well lit. Use textures to make it look expensive. Add a few really old things of your own, or buy a couple of small antiques and display them well but unobtrusively.

It adds a personality to the place.

Keep the booze hidden, except a few bottles owine in a nice rack.

Make sure your silverware, dishes and glasses all match. No need to go overboard, just enough for 4 people to start.

The nicer you make the place, the more you and others will enjoy spending time there.

Oh yeah, some indoor plants never hurt, as long as they go with your stuff (and you, you know, keep them alive.)

Find cool pictures that you have taken, and have them blown up and framed. No posters... they are tacky and immature. I have my snowboards mounted on the wall in my room and it works. Also have a cool african mask, adds a bit of flavor.

Bamboo plants look very "young" and nice. They can add some style to a bachelor pad.

keep it simple. A minimalist approach will end up looking the nicest imo. Its about quality, not quantity.

to expand on what others have contributed:

350 thread count is sufficient, but more is always better.

yes buy the best matress you can. Not only do you spend every night laying on it, but it will be with you for years! I bought a $1K one when I moved out less than 2 months ago. I have NO regrets.

allposters.com was visited before I moved out. I have my bedroom in a black and white theme. Every poster is framed in a nice frame and has an "artsy" feel to it. Bedspread is black and gray, dresser is black, etc. Go with a modern look if you can pull it off. As said before, quality, not quantity. Rooms like these will get attention (whether it be negative or positive):

Also plants. Our living room is full of them. They add to make the place warm and cozy.

Wow I should just be gay after reading all this

The gf and I just moved into our apartment about 2 weeks ago.

Downstairs, we did (are doing), kind of a tropical theme, real airy and just happy feeling..

Upstairs all of our pictures are black and white and furniture is pretty contemporary.

Just got the surround sound hooked up today, ran all the speaker wire through the walls, so it looks nice and clean. Waiting on Cox to come give me my damn HD cable box, I'll be a happy man once the HD is hooked up.

Sounds like we have a lot of the same ideas, which is good. I have plants currently and can keep them alive, so that's good to go, lol. I like minimalism, the apt is kind of neutrally colored, so I think I'm going to do a lot of black and brushed metal w/ some red accents hear and there. Unfortunately I don't have a money tree, but I am fortunate to have a generous dad and a well paying job! My dad is buying me a new bed and all new furniture, I'm taking care of all the other smaller stuff.

And cmerc, the bedroom door into the living area is actually two massive doors that open out of the way for a walkway that is about five feet wide, and the place has nine foot ceilings, so I think I'm good to go!! lol

PS - I think I want a dart board in my room, is that tacky? haha

All good advice, but the biggest thing is keep it clean. Nobody likes coming over if you've got your dirty dishes piled up and the garbage has fruit flies circling it. Bathrooms are a big area to scrub if you're entertaining ladies. Also... most women hate climbing into an unmade bed, at least throw the covers up and over.

Stay in the budget, its not hard to find tasteful furniture/deco on the cheap.

Stay in the age group... if you're a 20 year old college student then keep it simple. Otherwise you could come off like a prissy homo or a poser. I'm going to disagree with Nick on the booze to a point. If you can set up a small wet bar that usually goes over well... but don't just have bottles on top of the fridge or the kitchen counter.

if you would like i can build you a bar

Posted By: assbreeze On: 05-16-2008 @ 17:50:35     Reply | Top | Edit
I saw a corner tiki bar for sale locally on Craigslist a while back for about a grand.

It took every ounce of willpower in my system not to buy that bad boy, stock it, run some water to it, get a fridge, put my LCD next to it, and never leave my basement ever again.
