Yes. Google "Trojan" and "Remote Access Trojan."

There are ways, but honestly, the majority of ways in common use by people who don't really know how to "hack" are tricks which require direct access to the computer, or they have to send you an email or something with an attachment that has an embedded executable attached to it...

Problems like subseven, netbus, and a few others can be attached to things like flash movies, executables, etc, and when you view/open them they install a server which listens for connections from a remote computer... Of course, for those to work, it requires that your firewall software is not blocking the listening port, and a number of other things...

Oh, and they all require the remote use to know your IP ahead of time...

If you run a good virus scanner on your PC, it will identify most if not all common use trojans which any normal or even slightly advanced user would have...

If you run any sort of firewall, you should be protected for the most part, but the best way to make sure someone isn't trying to hit you is to remove all of your "allow" exceptions in the firewall config, and tell it to prompt you any time someone requests access to a port on your PC... That way you'll know when people are trying to connect to you... And you'll know when a process on your PC is trying to open a port up for external users to connect through...
