How the f*ck do I hang my TV??

Posted By: BigMike On: 05-14-2008 @ 16:17:17         Reply | Edit
I just bought a 52" plasma for the new apartment I'm moving into this weekend, and the damn thing feels like it weighs about eighty pounds. There isn't really any way I can put it on a stand (on the ground) without it looking dumb, so I have to hang it over the fireplace. Is it realistic to think I can hang a TV this big? And if so, how can I do it? Should I just hire somebody else to do it? Thanks guys.

oh god the coolest level goes way up when you do that shiiiitttt. you need a type of wall mount pins..they usually have people come and do it so it doesn't fall off.

Check to see if the manufacturer makes a mounting kit. If not, I wouldn't fuck with it, that thing costs way too much to try and wing it with a mount job 5-6 feet in the air.

Make sure you sit for a few minutes wherever your chairs are going to be and stare at where the TV's going to be...above the fireplace can be a little high for a viewing angle.

cant you just find the studs and use some heavy duty nails or screws and make a metal bracket then hang it with a thick metal wire?

For that size TV, you need to mount it to the studs... There should be a mount kit for that TV, which will allow it to be bolted through the drywall to the studs for a good solid support... Then you can connect the TV to it..

ive mounted hundreds of them, if you have a shred of doubt about doing it youself, consult a home theatre contractor or an electrician.

the wires coming out of the back are going to look a little silly unless you snake them through the wall, which if its above the fireplace, could be a nightmare.

I'm starting to wish I had paid more attention when the sales guy was telling me about installation and such, lol. I'm pretty sure I can do it, so I'll prolly go scouring the internet for a mounting kit. Either that or just call someone else to do it. I think my head would just explode if this thing fell off the wall one day. lol

please don't mount it above the fireplace if it is above eye level... my friend has her LCD mounted about 8-9 feet above the floor above her fireplace. I REFUSE to look at that thing it annoys me so much.

We were planning on mounting the 50" we just got above our fireplace, but realized the 'studs' were just 1x2's sandwiched between the wallboard and the masonry of the chimney, which would not have supported the weight. So the TV is sitting in front of our fireplace for the summer, which is annoyingly low, and my dad is planning on rebuilding the wall by the time we need the fireplace again and putting real studs in there that will actually hold the weight of the TV. Ours is like 90 lbs I think.

i thought it was bad for the tv's for them to go above the fireplaces? the heat fucks them up i thought...

eitherway, the easiest way for you to hang your tv is send it over to my house, i'll take care of all the hard work for you buddy and send you pics when it gets mounted.

If you dont have a level above the one your putting the tv in, you could buy long wires and run it to the attic and run the back down another stud slot, but seriously making a bracket for it with studded bolts shouldnt be too terribly hard

I disagree with it looking dumb on a stand...they make some really nice ones. My friend just put a 50 on a stand and it looks fine.

i put mine on a stand, and my buddy just put a 52 i think on a stand and it looks great. My other friend went above the fireplace and i think it looks to high as well. Go with a stand and you wont have to worry about hiding wires in the wall, or about it falling.

I cringe evertime I see that tv commercial of the guy trying to put his plasma on the wall...
...then it falls off.

I would go with either the stand or a professional installer.
I think over the fireplace would be too high, just mho.

Good luck which ever way you go!!

how tall is your fireplace?

I hear what you guys are saying about the height, but I think my fireplace would be borderline cuz it's full sized but not really all that tall. I'm 6'3" tall and the mantle is at like mid chest on me. The bottom of the TV would be right about at my shoulder level. It would certainly be higher than if it was on a stand, but I don't think it would be ridiculous. As far as the stand goes, it's not necessarily that I think it would be dumb looking, more that there's no easy place in the living room in this place to put a 52" plasma on a stand. I don't think Ill ever actually ever use the fireplace, so the TV should be safe, lol

most wall mounts hold up to 200 lbs so you shouldnt have to worry about it falling off if you read the directions correctly..

Buy a mount that is correct for the brand and size. Make sure you're mounting the wall side of the bracket to ONLY the studs.

The viewing angle will probably be ok. It's a plasma so you're not going to have the color wash an LCD tv has.
