I R a jurnelist now

Posted By: 2piececrank On: 05-13-2008 @ 22:34:47         Reply | Edit
Got the email yesterday that one of my old profs was moving on to become the editor of a local magazine and she wanted me as a freelance writer for her. Details are still scant, but I am pretty excited. Being nice to your profs really opens up some opportunities to put things on the ole resume. The only shitty part is that I need to have 3 ideas for articles by Friday in addition to my normal work schedule and a tough summer course (4.5 hours a day/ 5 days a week).

congrats! Journalism is fun. after writing an editorial on mccain (its in the election sticky..) i was offered a job as a senior staff writer for my college paper.

What topics do you like writing about? Popular culture, international politics, national politics, environment, sports, etc?

I have done a lot of pop culture and science related stuff, but for right now we have some themes to follow. I am waiting for her to email me back with a little more about the themes and what she is looking for.

On the front page of USA Today, a writer wrote something along these lines...dont remember the exact quote though. They fixed it online, but its still in the paper.

"most Democrats nationally say Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton should continue the campaign, but more say that it's time for Clinton to quit."

Steve and Justin, it looks like you two may be able to find jobs no problem if these are the kind of people you are up against for a potential writing job...

Nice going! It's cool to know that lots of people might actually WANT to read what you write.

I did a paper on the evolution of music in America covering everything between the Mayflower and the Moody Blues. It was about 75 pages.

My professor asked me after the semester was over if I would sign a release so he could use excerpts from it in a book he was writing. Only a couple hundred $ came my way since it was used as a text book though.

Let us know when your work will be available. Won't it be fun having all of us as critics

I will continue my job working as a beer bitch. Because I would be freelance, there is no guarantee that I would win any spots for articles, especially not immediately. I think I am the only non-journalist who will be writing, so it should give me some unique advantages and disadvantages.

You guys will be able to read me probably in October for sure. The ed. wants me to do a piece on the local horror fest (the one that I work as staff at), and my earliest opportunity to get in would be August.

Fury and cmerc are criticizing my spelling? If maxwax gets in on this too I might have to give up this writing gig as well as my part time job correcting all you mfers' spelling on here.

Good luck making any money. A friend of mine just graduated college with a journalism degree and is making more money doing a job he could've gotten straight out of high school than anything he's been offered that requires a journalism degree. And anyone I know who's been in the business for a few years doesn't make anything significantly more than the current starting salaries. My friend covers 3 to 4 local sports events every week, kills his nights pretty much all week between going to the games and calling players and coaches, and he's lucky if he clears $100 a week. He also has a full time job.

Oh and I will be very critical of your spelling from now on. I was an editor at my school paper for a semester a year or two ago, and I was good. Freaking boring though.

My spelling is usually very close to perfection, barring being overwhelmingly tired or drunk, but you are welcome to try and find me making mistakes.

I would never get a journalism degree, at least not until I come out of the closet and marry Tyrel. This is something that I am doing for a little extra moolah and to go on my resume. I figure beer distributor manager, plus writer, plus member of my school's environmental committee, plus a few other things should look pretty nice.

That's the exact reason why I didn't become a sports journalist. Between the money not being there, the huge competition for jobs, and print media likely being on it's way out...well, do the math.
