Motorcycle question for the fbody bike club!!

Posted By: BigMike On: 05-13-2008 @ 19:00:17         Reply | Edit
Soooo I'm getting sick of looking around at cars that I can "kind of" afford, and I'm thinking I'd rather buy a bike. I've wanted one for years, and it's something I can buy cash right now (up to about 6-7 thousand), so why not?? The problem is that I haven't been on anything with two wheels and a motor since riding dirt bikes yeeeeears ago. So I basically have no experience. My questoin is basically the classic "what type of bike should I buy?" Of course I've seen all over the web that an SV650 is the best bike for beginners, and I'd be willing to purchase one, but I've always loved R6's and would really love to have one of my own. I would also be open to buying something goofy like a Harley Sportster or whatever, lol.

What do you experts think would be cool, fun, affordable, and safe for me to learn on?

If you want a sport bike I believe that most anyone with a little common sense and respect for the machine and what it can do will be OK starting out on a 600.

Take a Rider's Edge course or something similar. It will get you back in the swing of things and probably teach you a few more.

you can learn on a 600 you just have to use your head and stay out of the gas and be easy. it was easy for me i still had to break the bike in. the dirtbike experience will help more than you think. get the bike you want dont settle for something you might regret.

Here's my thoughts:

I took "the class" after I had been riding with my permit for about 3 or 4 weeks. I didnt learn a whole lot of shit in the class other than getting a good solid 10 hours of practice in. If you havnt taken it, sign up now. Keep looking for bikes in the meantime. If you find one, great, buy it.

I've probably read all the same articles and posts you have about the SV650. I too wanted a rocket but knew it wouldnt be a good first bike. To this day I still have no regrets buying the SV650. What I didnt realize before was how "quick" this thing is. These things have a LOT of torque to get a pretty light bike moving. I thought it was a pretty standard bike until I got on it after riding the class bikes (250's and 200's). You sit further forward on the SV than you'd think. It basically is a sport bike with low end power and a non sport front end. I posted a race in the "drag race" section about a triumph daytona 675 I raced. Go look it up if you want to know more about it.

The thing about bikes in this price range (under $5000) is that you can sell it 1 or 2, maybe 3 years later for the EXACT same amount. My buddy had a 2002 honda shadow 750... bought it 3 years ago this spring for $3900. He just sold it for $4400 and there was a LOT of interest... he coulda got more.

So you could, in a year or 2, sell the SV and buy the R6. That's what I would do if I were you.

Oh and I was thinking about getting a ninja 250 as well but everyone told me I would get bored with it quick. That couldnt be more right. I would be bored with it already. DONT get a 250.

a ninja 500 wouldnt be bad either.

I've been wanting to pick up a 250 just for shits and giggles...and the 70mpg. But me being 6'1 and 280lbs, I'd look awefully dumb on one and probably kill the gas mileage. Right now I ride around mostly on a Nighthawk 750..which is more of a sport bike than a crotch rocket. It can definitly pick up the front wheel at lower speeds, but its no speed demon and still gets 50+ mpg

I'm more of a cruiser fan myself...so the next bike will be a VTX or Harley
