Any of you guys drive scooters/Low Speed Vehicles daily?

Just curious if anyone here has decided to leave their gas guzzler home yet due to the cost of gas and instead opt for an electric/gas scooter or an approved Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) like the GEM Car ( http://www.gemcar.com/ ) ?

I work 4.1 miles from home - it's all basically flat/paved side roads with 25 or 35mph speed limits so I'm thinking that a scooter would be ideal for me. I'd just bike or run to work but I go home on my hour lunch break to let the dog out.

Seems like NJ state laws make electric or gas scooters illegal on public roads, subject to seizure for a first offense even - which seems like bullshit - and these LSVs are like $7K for a bare bones model which defeats the money saving aspect.

Just curious if anyone has done the research and/or made the switch.

Not a LSV (that'd be the truck) but I have a bike I drive at every opportunity. It's saved me enough in fuel costs to more than pay for itself. I also live 16 miles from work, If I'm nice to it it'll get JUST under 50mpg, and if I beat the hell out if it, she still gets 30mpg.

Even a little Kawi 250 would save you a ton on fuel costs if your just looking for basic transportation, and they only list for ~4k brand new. you can get an older used one for less than 2500. but they have been the same since the early 90's till 2007, the 08's actually look good if you care.

Used to ride a scooter everywhere I went. After it broke I rode the bus. Now My wife and I car pool. We are looking at buying a 2nd vehicle for me since the TA is for sale. This would be for emergencies when she had the Trailblazer and I needed to take the dogs or our child somewhere.

Scooters are fun but spend the money on a nice one. I learned the hard way.

After doing some Googling, I'm thinking something like this would work perfect for me:

http://www.spookytoothcycles.com/component/page,shop.product_details/flypage,shop.flypage/product_id,295/category_id,82/manufacturer_id,0/option,com_virtuemart/Itemid,154/

$770 with the 2nd battery - 18mph on the motor - range of 30-40 miles (more than enough for my whole day's commute) and since it's a bicycle, I don't have to worry about the stupid DMV rules/laws. I've done the math and my average speed in my car is about 21mph for my 4 mile commute even though the roads are all 50mph speed limits. I figure at 18mph on the motor, I'd be able to average 14-15mph or so since I shouldn't be stuck in traffic at red lights for as long (ie, there are times I see a light change 3-4 times while I'm waiting in traffic, on the bike I would be waiting at most one light)

I'm thinking that I might invest my tax rebate check in one of these. I put $44 in gas into my WS6 yesterday at $3.87/gal for 93 - I figure that number will easily be $4.25 if not more over the summer so even at 770, this should should pay for itself in 3-4 months time. Not to mention it would keep miles off of my WS6 which increases resale value later on and I don't need new tires as often or oil changes as often, etc.

Of course, I could also actually peddle on my way home from work and call it part of my workout routine.

Opinions, comments, suggestions, bad jokes?

^ wow we are already at 4$ a gallon. Ugh..why do i get the feeling that gas will never go down.

I almost wounder if i should invest in a bike to save gas.

you thought gas was gonna go back down? never gonna happen man unless it becomes a utility like gas or electric. which it should be, EVERYONE uses it for the most part.

scooters are fun. Its what we always used to drive in italy. a bunch of my friends also had 50cc cars. we would put $5 of diesel into them, and it lasted a long ass time.

I often drive Yaris hatchbacks at work. Very slow, but remind you a lot of go-karts. Definitely a good investment, though maybe not with your short commute.

I take the bike as much as possible. In fact since my wife's job is on the way to mine, we usually commute almost every day (in the car). Its about 20 miles to work with dropping her off. My truck stays parked at home all but one or two days a week I use the bike or car to see my clients on the weekends since they are about 60 miles away.

We get good mpg out of the car, but nothing beats 50+ out of the bike

I would pick up a used 250 rebel, ninja, etc. before I got a scooter. My GF's rebel can get 70 miles a gallon with her riding it not trying to keep up with me...

In other words, conservatively!
