Looking for a Laptop

well, right now I am living in tight spaces and I move about every 8 weeks and I am sick of lugging my desktop around. I also travel a lot and would like to be able to bring a laptop with me. It would also be nice to be able to bring it along to some of my more boring classes.
Anyway, my desktop now is like 3 years old and not that great anymore, although it does do a pretty good job - the only game I really play is Counter-Strike: Source
P4 Prescott Core 3.2GHZ Nvidia Geforce 6600GT 128MB 1GB DDR PC3200 250 GB Internal (lots of space free) 250 GB External
So I was looking at getting a laptop and I want something that is going to last (hopefully for 3.5 more years until I graduate) for $1500. I am looking for advice on brands and what I should get in it.
What is everyone's opinion on sizes (14.1" or 15.4" ? note I will be also running my 19" LCD with the laptop screen
I was looking at
Dell Vostro 1400 Dell Latitude D630 Sony Vaio CR HP dv2500t
anything else I should look at, what does everyone here recommend? I get a discount on the dells through school.

I'm probably going to get a Dell M1330, a buddy at work picked one up and I was pretty impressed with it. Dell's are usually pretty functional but boring, this one had a lot of great features. Might be a little small for you... its only 13.1 inches. -- 95 Formula 1 of 7,448

Honestly IMHO if you want a laptop to last, buy it at Best Buy and pay for the extended warranty. That way you are guaranteed to have a working laptop for the length of the warranty.
If you really use a laptop, it will eventually break. I have NEVER carried it without a proper case, or dropped any of them. My Compaq had 1 hard drive go out, two lcd screens, the touchpad, and some connection to the screen that made it flash. My Gateway has had the screen, the hinges, and the DVD burner drive go bad. All replaced under warranty, and unlike most stores you actually take it to the store rather than paying to ship it somewhere. Then they ship it off on their dime.
The only negative is you have to go without it while they are repairing it.
The warranty price is high, but the first repair on a laptop can cover it. I actually got my gateway for free because my compaq broke enough to qualify for the lemon policy.
One other thing, if I had it to do over I would have gotten a smaller laptop. Portability and weight are more important to me now that I lug it around every weekend, than outright processing power. --

^Yeah... I know I'm hard on my work laptop. No matter what the brand the hard drive and the hinge connections are prone to fail from wear. I'm in the market for a SMALL laptop for school. I've got a 17" model right now and I'm sick of dragging it around, plus the battery life is next to useless. -- 95 Formula 1 of 7,448

the best thing I could recommend is upgrade your desktop to do whatever it is you want to do and buy the cheapest laptop you can to get by. A laptop will NEVER be a gaming platform. --

I have a HP dv9308nr I got from bestbuy about 6 months ago and I love it. Only cost me $750 and it runs CS without and hickups. Only thing I've done to it was add another gb of memory. I can run Everquest, CS, and 2 virtual machines without it lagging or hanging. Great machine for the price.
You can also opt. for the next step up with 2gb ram and the nvidia 7300 instead of the 6150 for not too much more $$$. -- 1997 Mystic Teal Trans Am, M6, Leather, Hardtop.

+2 for the M1330. I am still figuring out if I am going to buy a new laptop, but if I do that will be the one. I like a slim functional laptop, I currently have a Sony Slimline and it is also under 4lbs -- Former ride: 531RWHP/477RWTQ Only bolt ons! ...technically everything used a bolt to install

as for the gaming laptop - that is not really what this is intended for. CS:S is kind of old now and not very demanding, I am fairly certain any of these choices could run it and I don't plan on getting into much other stuff with it. This laptop is more for practicality not for gaming. -- http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2210351

the aspire 7520 is geared as a media laptop, watch dvds, high def everything including hd dvd player and burner. great for games, awsome for work related stuff, 17 inch widescreen with mine, lots of power, hovering round a grand, and it has a full keyboard and bluetooth if you use it. -- 1980 Camaro Z28

if your going to buy a new laptop buy a macbook pro. hands down are the nicest machines out and will run windows xp on them. however they do come with a price tag.
if you buy a new laptop from best buy its going to come with windows vista. And even tho you can throw xp on there not all of them have XP supported drivers, so youll run into problems there. i have many times.
You can special order xp loaded ones off of their website. and BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. $250 to extend the warranty by 2 years is worth it.
From my experience toshiba[lenovo] makes the best quality ones. in other words, durability.
So make sure you get a dual core processor. and 2 gigs isnt necessary and usually its cheaper to buy 1 gig and then upgrade to 2.
if you decide to spend under 800 the lower end gateways are junk. -- K&N, Edelbrock, T5 swap, MSD, Flowmaster, 3.73s 3600watt sound system wrapped in falkon ziexs mmm

BTW
do yourself a favour and pick up a 4 gig usb pendrive. i recommnd the OCZ readyboost or rally 2.
Vista uses readyboost technology where it will acess your pendrive to move swapfiles etc with easing the load on your main ram. Ratio is supposed to be twice the amount of onboard ram you have. It does make a huge difference with Vista and when running games and programs and burning and surfing the net. -- 1980 Camaro Z28
