If you want to help out with the PatriotDream.org Camaro

Posted By: 4Birdman On: 01-04-2008 @ 13:19:50         Reply | Edit
Please let me know. We are having a heck of a time locating a Camaro in our price range. If you could spare even a dollar, it would be greatly appreciated.

We've already had parts donations from:
Undercover Innovations
G-Machine Racing
Road Killer Kustoms
Painless Wiring
NPD
Hermance Design
Auto Twirler
POR-15
Strictly Performance
RotorsOnline
TA Specialties

We're getting a lot of parts to build the car, but it means nothing without the car! Please send me a message, or maybe a little donation to donate@patriotdream.org. We'll put your name on the webpage in the special thanks section!

What are you looking for? In what condition? And for how much?

We've already had a lot of an interior donated, along with a late model 5.3L and the corresponding harness.

All the body work and paint have been donated as well, so we're hoping to find a car that isn't too beat down since they are doing it free of charge.

This car will be basically built from scratch, so a good rolling chassis would be perfect. I'd like to find one between $2k-$4k.

Or free if some big classic car wants to donate one for sponsorship on the webpage.

I really don't see this one going for 10 grand, but I haven't been following the first gen market.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/big-block-camaro_W0QQitemZ180127749297QQihZ008QQcategoryZ6161QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Not sure how much body work you want to do, but here is one rather cheap but a cancer patient unfortunatly.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1968-Camaro-Numbers-Matching-Driveline_W0QQitemZ110135305040QQihZ001QQcategoryZ6161QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It seems your budget and your goals arn't exactly lining up. Or you will have to do a bit more body work then you originally planned.

Friggin eBay doesn't work at my work.

I have no problem replacing floorboards, trunk, and lower quarters, I just don't want to have to go into reskinning the quarters and roof or anthing like that.

I really think there is one out there, just sitting in some guy's yard waiting for us. I'm going on a long road trip this weekend to a wedding, I'm gonna keep my eyes wide open.

It's in the works, I'll let ya know when it's sent, prolly tomorrow.

Good looking car.I had a '68 white with black top spoiler front and rear black bumble bee stripe on the nose, man I wish I had it now.

Posted By: 4Birdman On: 06-06-2007 @ 14:43:37     Reply | Top | Edit
That sounds sick.

This one is gonna be red with a white hockey stick stripe and a blue-accented 327 badge.

Strictly Performance has donated a late-model 5.3L shortblock, and we also have a 4L60E, and Painless has donated the harness. It'll be an awesome blend of old and new that will be a good reliable car for Shawn.

We will be taking everyone who donates at least $5 to PatriotDream.org and putting their name, or if they wish, someone else's name in honor or memory of them.

We will be taking all of the names and printing them out of card stock and having two sets made. One set will be presented to Shawn when we give the car to him, and the other set will be placed under the back seat of the Camaro so it will forever be a part of the car.

We have a line on a car, but we are short on funds. If you can spare anything, please let us know. Funds can be sent to donate@patriotdream.org and be sure to note what name(s) you would like to have printed on the card.

Well, the rear shock towers are rusted out and need replacing, but we had a guy donate all the welding work, so that won't be an issue. It's already had most of the metalwork done, just not that part.

And thanks for the sticky guys, you guys are awesome!

That doesn't sound like much work, the outside looks fine, are you even gonna mess with the exterior??

Most of the ones I found in your budget range really needed some love.

That car looks like it needs a motor and a driver:surprised:

It's not doing anywhere with the shock towers like they are! It's got a really crappy paint job on it, apparently. We've had a shop donate a paint job, so it will be stripped and repainted.

I'm gonna do a complete teardown and rebuild on it. I want him to have a good car that he won't have to mess with.

I also found a 69 that the guy is supposed to send me pics of. It is supposedly pretty nice too, just needs engine and tranny.

Well, Shawn's dad found some pics over the weekend and the car was a red 67 with a 327 and 4-spd. I thought he had said it was a 69, but it was my mistake.

So the search is back on for a 67-68 Camaro.

 I've been a little out of it since the accident, so I kinda forgot about that save as ability.

I had an idea today to bring forward to my boss. I am going to see if he will donate a dollar for every thousand in sales. It won't hurt him much and it will help you a lot, and being former-army, it is quite possible he will go for it.

We got a few more donations, but still don't have enough to buy a decent car. But things are going good and the money is coming in still.

NPD has come through HUGE for us and has offered to send one of their trucks from their Ventura distribution center in Cali to pick up our engine from Strictly Performance and bring it to their warehouse in Charlotte. Then I'll just have to go pick it up down there. Major thanks to them, it's not often a big company like that will do something so generous as that.

So in two or three weeks we will have the engine at the machine shop being rebuilt.

The engine will be at the machine shop in about two weeks or so, then the rebuild begins. Sold a bunch of Trans Am parts I had sitting on the shelf and bought some stuff for the engine. Got some sweet red anodized aluminum fuel rails with blue AN fittings and braided line.

Also got a set of stock valve covers that I'm going to smooth out and powdercoat wrinkle black, a set of LS1 injectors and clips, LS6 valve springs, and an LS1 Throttle body that I'm going to P&P.

So here's the engine combo that I'm going to go with.

Gen III 5.3L out of a 2005 truck with block painted black, donated by Strictly Performance (shipping by National Parts Depot)
LS1 intake smoothed and powdercoated bare aluminum color
Red anodized fuel rail, LS1 injectors, blue AN fittings, and braided line
Wrinkle black valve covers
LS1 TB powdercoated Super Chrome
Cam included in HI-RPM kit
HI-RPM kit donated by Painless Performance
5.3L heads, 3-angled and milled, LS6 springs, left bare aluminum
LS4 oil pump
Engine and heads will be built and assembled thanks to a donation by HRT Performance.

Can't wait to see this thing built, it's gonna look sexy.

Lightning Auto Customs has donated a shift boot for a T56 in a 67 Camaro, along with the plans for the bezel, which I am going to draw up in SolidWorks and have made up. This thing is NICE! They also hooked us up with some vinyl decals.

Our engine will also be at the terminal next Wednesday, so then the fun begins with that! Big thanks to National Parts Depot for the free ride for our engine on one of their trucks cross-country!

Yep, major score on this one!

Got it off of the Pro-Touring.com board. This guy has replaced like half the body with Goodmark sheetmetal and has done an amazing job with it. He's throwing in all kinds of parts and things, and the car was a complete car so I've got everything for it! And a clear VA title!

He's installed brand new rear quarters, tail panel, inner and outer rockers, cowl patches, floor pans, etc.

He's also giving me a brand new 4-link setup, drop spindles with rotors (gonna sell the rotors, we're going with LS1 brakes and having Ed work over the spindles), custom widened rear wheels that he spent $1k on, Muncie 4-spd with brand new Centerforce clutch and flywheel(also gonna sell), and a ton of other parts.

He's done more work since these pictures, but at least it gives you an idea!

And the before shot:

Thanks nic! I appreciate it!

OK, as it stands right now here is the plan for the car. This is provided a few sponsorship deals come through and we are able to run what we want.

Engine: 5.3L Gen III bored out to 5.7L with LS1 flat-tops; 5.3L heads resized for LS1 valves, 3-angled, and ported; LS1 intake with EGR blockoff; Coated shorty headers; Undecided cam

Transmission: T56 out of 99 TA; rebuilt with iron forks and billet keys and all; SPEC Stage 2 clutch and Billet steel flywheel; Hurst shifter with white ball

Wheels/Tires: Wheel Vintiques V40 with Toyo Proxes 4 tires - 17x8 fronts 245/45/ZR17s, 17x9.5 rears 275/45/ZR17

Suspension: Full AirRide setup front and rear

Steering: Upgraded steering with power box and LS1 PS pump

Exhaust: Undecided

Interior: Stock appearing black interior with aftermarket gauges and modern sound system

That's what I've got planned so far. Right now the car is sitting waiting for me to order the AirBar setup for the rear so I can install the rear suspension and finish out all the body work in the rear.

But at least it is in the shop now and waiting for me to get dirty with the welder.

Right now here are some photos of the car in the shop, along with the final rendering from Ben. Note the stripe on the cowl that he came up with and the Wheel Vintiques V40 wheels.

Did a little work on the taillights tonight. The bezels were in terrible shape and were rusted and pitted. The pictures make it look a lot better than is actually is, but it still came out pretty good. I'm a perfectionist when it comes to my powdercoat, so I'm going to block same it to take out some of the small runs and bumps and lay a second coat on it to see if it will fill some of the pits. I'm going to go tomorrow to pick up some stainless hardware for the back of it, too. I changed the lenses from the stockers to a set of LEDs that MuscleRodz hooked me up with.

So it went from this:

We got some work done last night on the car. First is my beautiful wife and her paintjob on the rotisserie!

And then we move on to the car.

We took the rear spolier off and it looks like it was held on by two studs and a ton of silicon. One more thing to fix. The trunk lid looks very savable, though.

Also got the interior most of the way torn down. The wiring is trash and most everything needs to be replaced, but I want to give Shawn a new car, so I would be replacing all of that anyway.

And the rear axle that a friend gave me for the car. It is only a 8.2", but I'll freshen it up and it should do fine. I gotta use what I can if it isn't donated for this build, so 8.2" axle it is.

And then we tore down most of the front sheetmetal and all on the car. Gonna try and finish smoothing the firewall and getting it cleaned up soon.

American Auto Wire is also hooking us up with a new interior wiring harness for the car! All I could think about as I sat there holding the remnants of the car's harness in my hands was "I hope AAW is interested in helping out" and sure enough, they came through for us!

Got some new parts! A friend of mine gave me an LS1 intake and coolant tubes for the engine. I also got in the Bullitt replica wheels that Custom Wheels Market gave me a discount on.

Haven't done much to the car since I just bought some new tools since I broke a few and some of mine just plain sucked. Gotta have the right tools to build a good car! The aftermarket frame is being lengthened for me by Staples Engineering, so once that is done I'll be able to get the back of the car back together.

Well, it's going a little slow right now, but things are going on in the background! No photos worth posting though. The engine is being built, the trans is being rebuilt, and I still haven't gotten the frame back, but should have it back by the weekend.

The spindles are going out this week to be modified to fit the LS1 brake setup, and I have modified the firewall and brackets to fit the LS1 brake booster. Once it is done and cleaned up I will post photos.

So that's where I am at. Prothane just donated a total Motion Control package for the car, so I'll be finishing up the front subframe as soon as the POR-15 that was donated gets here.

So as you see, it is slow now, but will hit me like a sock full of pennies in a week or so!

Comp Performance Group came through huge for us. They hooked us up with a Zex LSX wet nitrous kit and also have hooked Shawn up with discount pricing on any Comp Performance Group part for the rest of his life. They are also going to be putting out a press release about the project and said they'll get us in with a few magazines!

And my little man approves!

Also got the body completely stripped down and the junk subframe off the car. This weekend we'll be POR-15 painting the front subframe and I'll hopefully have the rear frame rails by then as well. I built a little body cart for the front out of some junk 2x4s that were in my way. Worked out pretty well since the back is on casters.
