Computer peeps,.. I need your help again....

Posted By: 94RedFormula On: 02-06-2010 @ 23:01:42         Reply | Edit
I really did kill my computer.

I took pics of the snow and uploaded them onto my computer.

With the camera still hooked up to the computer I tried to do the "safely remove device" thing but the only option it gave me was to safely remove my printer.

Didn't wanna do that so I just unpluged the camera.

Tried to go to Photobucket to put the pics on there so I could post them and my computer shut off.

Then it got in a loop where it would try to start, apologize that it couldn't start, said it was going to try to restart again in 30 secs and it would keep doing that loop.

Andy can get it into safe mode but he can't put it back to a previous date that was okay.

He's thinking that the only thing he can do is a factory restart. And he's not even sure it will do that.

Andy's puzzled cause he can't fix it. He's always been able to fix it. He worked 12 hours today out dealing with this stinking snow. Maybe he's too tired and not thinking clearly.

Maybe there is something he could do to fix it.

What do you think?? Any suggestions??

99.99% of the time you can just remove a usb device w/o having to worry about anything corrupting. When something does corrupt, its the files on the usb device, not windows. In all the years I've been fooling with computers, I've only heard of one person that I know that corrupted something by not using the "safely remove device" and it was a thumb drive.

It is possible but I doubt the camera had anything to do with this. What kind of errors (if any) are showing up on the screen when you try to start? Are you getting a "blue screen of death"?

Most factory wipes will save your files but you will lose any programs that didnt come with the computer...kind of a win/lose situation.

You can do a windows reinstall with the option of keeping your personal data and it overwrites the windows directory. It will be enough to back up your data elsewhere, but I'd recommend a full reinstall after that as it is a pretty "dirty" solution. (messes up with registry values and so forth)

Lemme know if u have anymore Q's.

Thanks Jer, I've done that a lot of time before and it never freaked out.
No blue screen, when I try to turn it on I get the COMPAQ starting screen, then it goes to the next screen like it always does. THEN IT HAS ALL THIS TEXT ON THE SCREEN. Starts out with an apology that it can't start up, then it gives a bunch of options...safe screen...safe screen w/ networking...safe screen w/ command prompt...last known good configuration...start windows normally. Then it counts down from 30 and starts the cycle over again.

It says a bunch of stuff about what may have happened that caused it to shut down.

Thanks Ryan, my computer is 9 years old (xp), we've moved several times and I'm not sure we still have the disks that came with it.

Andy thinks he can back up my pics and data onto a thumb drive. He was so exhausted that he went to bed, has to work again tomorrow not sure when he'll get home.

THUMB DRIVE BACKUP...YEA/NO/MAYBE SO??

Of course I'm in the middle of an Ebay transaction with a possible asshole and I can't access my email.

Hey Jackie, Go to control panel, click system and then go the advanced tab, go down to where it says start up and recovery and click settings. Go where it says system failure and uncheck automatically restart. Do this in safe mode and see if that helps.

well there are a couple things you can try before backing up and reformatting.

#1 If you have an xp CD, boot from it and you'll get to this screen

Press R to go into a recovery console. Once you're in there, follow steps 3-9 under "repair prodecure" on the following page:

http://www.schrockinnovations.com/chkdsk.php

Once that is all finished, type fixboot, reboot, take your CD out and try to boot up.

If that does not work, before formatting, I would boot from the CD again except when you get to this screen

which should be the 4th screen or so, if there is a repair option there, run that. It will basically delete and reinstall your "C:windows" folder" It won't delete any of your files or programs.

If all else fails, find a way to pull the data off and format lol.

A recovery disk contains the OS and all of the software that was installed at the factory and is specific to the computer it was installed on.

I would try to pull the files you want from the computer and do a clean reinstall. If you can't access the harddrive, you can either remove it and place it in another computer and grab the files you need, or put the harddrive into an external USB enclosure plugged into another computer.

Once you do get the computer fixed up, make a complete backup.

Depending on how computer savvy your hubby is I would suggest this.

Buy a new hard drive, normally well south of 100 bucks, and disconnect the old one with your data on it. Install the new drive and restore disk on the new drive. Once this is completed reconnect the old hard drive as the secondary drive. This way you can pull all your personal files (videos, Pictures, important things.)

Good Luck

Okay, you know i'm a computer dummy.

Does this think do what leo was talking about?

I would keep using my computer but this would be in addition to my computer?

Or is this just to get my stuff off of my computer?

My computer has been having a lot of issues, would this bypass those issues?

If these questions are too dumb don't bother answering them, i'm sure andy will know more about it.

ya.. if you don't have a CD, i agree with everyone else. I would back up your data either by connecting your HD to another computer as it was previously mentioned.

Another option would a tool like this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002&cm_re=ata_to_usb-_-12-232-002-_-Product

Basically you connect your Hard Drive to that and then it pretty much becomes a huge USB drive. Technically, it's same as the first option without having to take the computer apart.

Posted By: Red89GTA On: 02-07-2010 @ 13:15:16     Reply | Top | Edit
At this point, does your computer boot up? I might have missed something, but if it's still not booting up, you're not going to be able to connect a external hard drive to it and pull the data off.

If you recover your computer, any problems related to the OS (operating system) will be fixed. problems like, viruses, it be slow, possible boot problems like you're having. If it's hardware related, no, it will not fix it.

Posted By: ryanfx On: 02-07-2010 @ 13:23:10     Reply | Top | Edit
Does this think do what leo was talking about?

This is a 500 GB external harddrive. You simply connect it via a USB and put whatever you want on it!

I would keep using my computer but this would be in addition to my computer?

Yup. It would sit on top your desk (that you can also move it to whatever computer you want)

Or is this just to get my stuff off of my computer?

This... and for backup purposes / external storage.

My computer has been having a lot of issues, would this bypass those issues?

This will store your data elsewhere so you can do a wipe / clean restore / reinstall without any worries of losing your data

You're getting a little technical on me.

Okay boot up, I would say no, but andy can "talk" to it, he did a scan on it before he left for work.

He's tried to restore it and that's not happening

andy seems to think he can put my data on a flash drive

No, not all XP cds are created equally. There are retail, OEM, volume, branded, action pack, and upgrade. An XP key from one type of cd won't work on another, etc. I just had to go through this with a few friends but fortunately between me and a couple of people we had each type of cd and finally found the one that would accept the key.

Jackie, if you use your son's XP cd, you MIGHT have to wind up using his key too since your key probably won't work...and of course that is illegal but rarely does anyone get in trouble for it.
