if this is true, then I tip my hat to him, good work!
http://us.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/11/18/obama.henry/index.html
"I think that we've restored America's standing in the world, and that's confirmed by polls," he told CNN's Ed Henry in a wide-ranging interview this week during his trip to China.
"I think a recent one indicated that around the world, before my election, less than half the people -- maybe less than 40 percent of the people -- thought that you could count on America to do to the right thing. Now it's up to 75 percent."

He has the right idea, just hasn't been implementing it the right way.
America, particularly in the Bush years, was perceived to be a block indifferent to the rest of the world. We were thought to have a very selfish, "fuck everyone else" attitude. From someone who has travelled quite a bit, it was getting BAD. I know that many of you support isolationism, but it really isn't beneficial in the long run. We need to be perceived as a caring member of the international community.
He doesn't have to do anything big to accomplish this, its just a matter of attitude. --

the world sees everything bush did as wrong.
but when obama does it, it is all of a sudden right, despite the fact that he continually breaks promises and is doing a lot of the same things bush was doing.....
A lot of it is perception.....
p.s. -
How do people ignore all the good things we do? The money we dump into the bottomless pit of the united nations (that then does nothing)? The amount of money we put into other humanitarian nations.....
All perception.... --

You mean the $1.5 billion that we are in arrears to the UN for?
DONT F**k YOUR ALLIES such as Israel
Yeah, that powerhouse over there... Israel should be no concern of ours, and our never ending support of them has done nothing but piss off the Muslim world (and rightfully so after we stole the land that hadn't been occupied by Jews for over 1000years). If the angle of a bow is all the faux-outrage you can muster, you might as well just give up.
Hardly. It's easy to be snarky about it and pass it off as a non-issue but the simple fact is the founders of this nation, as well as the countless thousands who died for it in past wars, had seen this they'd puke. Dismissing it as the "angle" of a bow is overlooking its significance. It's a cultural specific reference, and in their culture it comes just short of groveling or smacking your forehead on the ground. Many of us have no desire for an apologist for a President. If you disagree with how we've been going or have a new direction you want to take... then take it. Stand up like a man and be the President and quit acting like a whiny kid sucking up to the rest of the world. Traveling around sniveling about George Bush does nothing to promote confidence or trust. Leave that crap for your underlings and sympathetic media.
You mean the $1.5 billion that we are in arrears to the UN for?
I'm sure he meant the $26 billion in foreign aid, the unspecified amount spent from our defense budget to use our military for humanitarian missions (easily in the hundreds of millions), and the %22/%27 we pay for the UN's administrative and peace keeping costs respectively. Not to mention the magnamimousness of our country providing them safe location for the world's despots to bitterly complain about us while at the same time holding their hands out.
Steve, I think you're completely confused... Isolationism? That's been the opposite of our foreign policy for the last 17 years. I've traveled as much, likely quite a bit more, than you have and honestly... other than some of the more rabid locales (which will NEVER like us) we're in the same boat as we were when I was traveling around during the Clinton years and up to the present Obama years. The fact all this adulation is being heaped on a man who's basically kept the same policies in place as Bush is laughable. He's won a following by being "not-Bush", but fails to have an identity of his own. -- 95 Formula 1 of 7,448

I gotta say, I am really surprised at the venom that some on here appear to spout, and in most cases from the, in my perception Dems, as a general rule, Dems/Liberals dont appear to have any desire to even remotely attempt to understand (I did Not say agree with) ANY opposing view points, and that is really sad, for you have become the very thing you so eagerly and willingly decry. sad, really sad --

I would definitely say no side has a monopoly on vitriol or ignorance. A lot of us simply like to argue. I know there have been some pretty heated exchanges between me, Justin, Tbone, Tino, etc... at times but I don't take it personally and I'd hope they don't either.
One thing I'll say from my own experience is that my liberal friends typically try to approach the argument from an "enlightened" position and try to paint the conservative POV as "Christian-right" hysteria. When pressed on hard facts they usually resort to name calling. (These are specific people, I'm not generalizing all liberals) I've had a couple of them foaming-at-the-mouth angry during some discussions because the facts don't always line up with their beliefs.
I think most people are pretty middle of the road no matter which side they identify with. I know personally I don't agree with all the social issues that are labeled "conservative" but I tend to vote that way regardless due to my belief in smaller goverment. -- 95 Formula 1 of 7,448

Honestly... if you don't know what you're talking about... don't.
I've been to Japan 4 times, as an FYI. Bowing that low is a sign of weakness in their eyes. That's the short answer... there's a reason other U.S. Presidents haven't done that. Try learning our history before lecturing us on Japanese history. -- 95 Formula 1 of 7,448

Chimpy, it is'nt really. if its a sign of weakness what are the japanese gonna do? bomb pearl harbor?
there is a difference between showing respect and being weak, and sometimes even if you are stronger, showing a little humility is ok.
besides, a bow does'nt erase our military bases over there, or the fact that we won't let them have an army.
Or the fact that if Jumper did'nt buy all that porno anime with the tentacle penis monsters in em, the japanese economy would collapse. thats why he goes to japan yu know.

You should... or at least wikipedia the protocol. Being open minded has nothing to do with it, it's literally thousands of years of cultural history and it has significance to them. Just because Americans are so ignorant and blase about even their own culture doesn't mean the rest of the world is.
The only thing I'm wondering is if this was even a calculated thing. Watching this pack of buffoons in the White House is sorta fun but painfully embarrassing. Somehow I have a hard time believing that the same group that gave the PM of England a DVD box set would know the significant cultural differences, and appropriateness, of the depth, angle, and eye contact of a bow. -- 95 Formula 1 of 7,448
