Interesting thoughts

Not sure about some of the stats relative to you guys last elections, but I thought the first part was very interesting, and plausable without doing the research to validate it.

About the time our original thirteen states adopted their new constitution in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the
University of Edinburgh ,had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years earlier:

‘A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government.'
'A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury.'

' From that moment on, the majority always vote for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.'

'The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years'

'During those 200 years, those nations always progressed through the following sequence:

1.
from bondage to spiritual faith;
2.
from spiritual faith to great courage;
3.
from courage to liberty;
4.
from liberty to abundance;
5.
from abundance to complacency;
6.
from complacency to apathy;
7.
from apathy to dependence;
8.
from dependence back into bondage'

Number of States won by:
Democrats: 19
Republicans: 29

Square miles of land won by:
Democrats: 580,000
Republicans: 2,427,000

Population of counties won by:
Democrats: 127 million
Republicans: 143 million

Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by:
Democrats: 13.2
Republicans: 2.1

Professor Olson adds: 'In aggregate, the map of the territory Republican won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of this great country.

Democrat territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in government-owned tenements and living off various forms of government welfare..' Olson believes the United States is somewhere between the 'complacency and apathy' phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached the 'governmental
dependency' phase.

Seems these aren't the results from the most recent election. They just deleted any mention of Bush/Gore.
http://www.snopes.com/politics/ballot/athenian.asp

The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years'

This isn't true. The word great means that we have few countries to go by, but that said, the time is much longer than 200 years if we only count great countries.

Examples:
Classical Greece: ~700 yrs (~1000BCE - 323BCE)
Roman Republic: 481 yrs (508BCE - 27BCE)
Roman Empire: 1480 yrs (27BCE - 1453CE)
Spanish Empire: 407yrs (1492CE - 1899)
U.S.: 233+yrs

I'll never understand why people are always ready to call for the downfall of the US being now!...or wait, now!...I mean now! It's the same thing with the end of the world. Shit, things are better now than they have been for all of history. Less people are starving, less wars, more free time, less hardships...sit back and enjoy the ride.

Sarav, how hard is it to follow Nietzsche? I read Machiavelli's The Prince earlier this year, and the only thing that was clear was to not trust mercenary infantry while fighting on the peninsula.

Whether he is capable of thoughts, or just copy/paste.....It appears to me that he has his shit together and won't fall into the that 90% of so-called "Americans" fell into while voting this jackass into office. Maybe he'll rent me a room?

Man is destined to either be ruled by god or tyrants.

Benjamin Franklin.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VHKpGJX29s

what I usually say is that ignorance is the single greatest american luxury. if things have been going well enough for people to not care, that means that our leaders(government)have been making the right moves for the past 50 odd years (mcarthy era excluded)

history is a good measure-point, but the world is very different and smaller now, perhaps things are sustainable and a new mold will be cast with the USA

I'll raise your Ben Franklin with a Denis Diderot.

"Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest."
