Damn..I put cheap tires on the GTO

Posted By: Sheridan On: 11-03-2009 @ 10:12:43         Reply | Edit
Yeah...kinda wondering how this will turn out in the long run. The factory tires were around $1000 before mounting and balancing, which seems pricey so I picked up some Sumitumo high performance all season tires hoping they will help this winter, seeing how I only have the GTO to drive now.

The car feels "looser" but I'm wondering if that isn't partially due to going from tires worn to the treadbars, to tires with a full depth tread pattern that is bound to flex a little.

They were only $98 each on sale so I figure if they make it through winter fine, I got my moneys worth.

It does feel weird to cheap out on an important performance part, but then again the tires had really good ratings in most categories. We shall see..

Well, if you're not racing it or driving it really hard than I don't see an issue. If the tires that came on it were geared for summer than these will be better in the colder months seeing as they're all season tires.

If it's your only car than I doubt you'll be beating on it as much as if you had a DD. In that case you'll be fine.

Yeah you make some good points there. Lately my driving has all been city and interstate with very few if any backroads. You know your old tires were bald when the new tires look bigger I didn't realize how bald they were

yes, they get shit for traction about the last 3/32 of tread, because they are down to the wear bars lol

you need another set, good thing they are cheap. mine generally last 6mos.

i run the HTRZ-II...directional tire, still cheap and they did just fine in the snow last year.

but for 160 tread-ware, nothing else comes close as far as traction short of bolting on my slicks.

all season tires shouldn't even really exist.

put some real tires on your rims and get some 17s to run snow tires!

snow tires last forever so they are worth the investment and then you have the appropriate tires for all the seasons.

I realize it is a bigger investment, but it is worth it.

High Performance all seasons I haven't really been a fan of, they don't perform that well in the summer and they suck kinda bad in the winter.

I have 2 sumitomo HTR ZIII tires on right now for the front, they are decent, but ill be stepping up to what I run on the back when they wear out.

I am extremely happy with my Dunlap Direzza Star Specs and they also were not a huge sum of money

they won car and driver's budget tire comparo.

They are far and away stickier than than the Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires I had on there before. I was really impressed.

These are only like 200 treadwear though, so they will probably be wearing rather quickly.

I got them installed at the Tire rack and it seemed like EVERYONE there made a comment on how good these tires were and what a good choice I had made. I would have to agree with them so far. Only real downside has been that now that is cold they are not as sticky immediately. They didn't even really need warmed up when it was still nice out.

Car is going away after the dyno this weekend anyway.

I had Sumi HTRZ's and they made it down to the threading of the inside of the tire. Also had good traction, but I had 315's on the WS6.

And I remember going from bare wire tires to new tires on my Camaro, the new ones did feel loose even though they were new. Probably because of what you said.

I don't mean to sound like a jackass but i've always had good luck with the standard BF Goodrich Radial T/A's. I had four on my 89' Firebird and I live in Buffalo and those tore through any snow, sleet or rain with no problems. I also thought they handled quite well. You can pick them up off discounttire.com for like $100 a piece which isn't bad at all

After driving a lot of miles this weekend, part of me thinks I'll be upgrading them sooner than I thought. At high speeds and changing lanes quick they just feel loose. I mean they will be fine for winter, I may just put new wheels and tires on next year and leave these for winter.

Oh I forgot to mention, these tires squeal when they spin, which I'm not used to. It's hilarious though, I was trying to catch my friend in his Charger this weekend in St Louis traffic. He got through some cars that closed me of, and I finally got an opening. I went about 1/4 of a block sideways in 2nd gear and it sounded like I was clubbing a fucking seal or something.

zr is just the speed rating, I wanted sticky rubber, especialy since the vette isnt a daily driver and doesnt see rain at all. When I shop tires i look up reviews on them from people with the same car as me. 114 bux isnt bad for tires i got lucky and had them on the vette for 1100 installed but usualy spend less on tires for other cars.
