Who cares if he refuses to marry someone? They should just go get married by someone else. If he believes the kids are affected, then fine. There are way worse things going on in Louisiana politics than some small town justice of the peace refusing to marry a couple. It is his job to marry people. People need to get over this "my beliefs don't allow me to do this part of my job" bullshit. You don't want to sell BC pills? Don't be a fucking pharmacist. Its the old "I don't want X to have this right, but I don't hate X, I have a lot of X friends." Its also the "We can't let them have our women" mentality. He assumes that marriages have to procreate, which isn't true. He assumes that the children won't be accepted, which he can't know to be true. He says that interracial marriages don't last long, but has he looked at the US divorce rate? He has no reason to believe that their possible children will be any worse off than any black couples or white couples children. PS - Loving v. He may not hate black people, but he obviously doesn't believe in equality. This falls right in the same category as gay marriage in my opinion. Other peoples opinions should not affect a couples right to devote their lives to each other. Virginia made it unconstitutional to deny a couple a marriage license to interracial couples. nobody said anything about anyone not being able to get married. Nobody is is losing their rights or being told they can't. They went to the man, whose job it is to issue a marriage license, and he told them that he would not issue it to them because they are interracial. That is a violation of their rights and it is unconstitutional. He was in the wrong, and he completely abdicated the responsibilities of his position based on an unsupported personal bias. He should lose the job he is too inept to handle. Its not like what he did hasn't been unconstitutional for 42 years or anything 
What else would someone do to defend themselves when called a racist? If someone called me racist, I'd be quick to point out that I have friends, etc. Just because someone has a black friend doesn't mean that they aren't racist. For instance, say I like Sarav, but maybe I don't like other Indian people, or I just don't trust any Indian person I don't know. I don't like their caste system and I hate talking to them for Dell tech support. But Sarav is an ok guy. But that doesn't mean I want him mixing with my people. Haggis and curry? Ick! That's still racist, even though I have an Indian friend (although why he would want to befriend me when I hold such views of his people for no reason is beyond me, and I may have just made Sarav up to make myself not seem racist). Just having a certain type of friend does not give you a carte blanche when it comes to dealing with that friend's race. The way to prove that you aren't racist is to not do and say racist things. I mean for fuck's sake, he said " I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," which is quintessential racism. Aside from that, the only way he could have been more racist would have been to call her a "n-lover," grabbed his torch, and formed a lynch mob. That's kinda ridiculous that people are nonchalant about it. As someone who has been in an interracial relationship (I hate this term BTW, it was the same as any other relationship) before, you would be surprised how many people are really vocal about keeping a segregation at some level. --
