Help diagnose her LS1 T/A

My mom has a 2000 Trans Am WS.6 6-speed. Black if it makes ya feel better, lol.
Now to the important stuff.
She said that after about 5 minutes of driving, it will get a weird stumble, and she will have to gas on it or rev it to make it go away. Once it's fully warm, say after 20-30 minutes, it quits and never comes back. It also doesn't do it within the first 1-2 minutes.
She says she thinks she hears the valves chatter when it does this. She got the codes pulled at autozone.
First code: P1416
Definition: Air system bank 2 fault
Explanation: During the Air system test the ECM looks for a change in the O2 sensor voltage - No change was detected
Probable cause:
1- Air pump electrical circuit fault
2- Blocked air system
3- Failed Air pump
The second and third code are the same descriptions, so I will post their descriptions once. The only difference is that one is bank 1, and the other is bank 2.
Code: P0420 (the bank 2 code is P0430)
Definition: Catalyst efficiency low-bank 1
Explanation: The oxygen sensors monitor the catalytic converters ability to store oxygen.
Probable cause:
1-Catalytic converter defective (failure possibly due to 2, 3, or 4)
2- Engine misfire or running condition
3- large vacuum leak
4- Engine oil leakage into exhaust-valve guide seals, piston rings
The guy she bought it from only mentioned that he cut the pipes before the mufflers. Didn't mention gutting the cats or anything, but could this be the cause? Thanks. -- 1991 Dodge Stealth R/T 3.0 DOHC 24-Valve Twin Turbo Pearl White

LMFAO. No one liked me when I totaled my Firebird and got a TT Stealth, hehe. I still remember a lot of names from around here.
A LOT of you guys have been here since I first started about 8 years ago. Good to see some of the old names. It's really cool.
If she'd give me her Trans Am WS.6, I think I'd fit in a little better. But now, I have an 86 F-150 5.0 EFI for working (NP435/9" rear) and I know you guys hate Fords, lol. -- 1991 Dodge Stealth R/T 3.0 DOHC 24-Valve Twin Turbo Pearl White

Haha, steve, I guess you just proved there are no knowledgeable people on this site anymore. No wonder it's dead now. I'll go to a real site.
Last time I was here, HBHRacing kept a "SECRET MOD" secretive for like 1 or 2 years, then when he revealed this "SUPER MOD", it was a friggin fan controller or something.

p0420: both the sensor in front of the cat and the rear of the cat are reading similar values. technically speaking, this shouldn't happen unless the catalytic converter isn't functioning correctly, or is completely missing in the first place .
p0430: this one says the o2 sensor BEHIND the converter is sensing the converter isn't functioning properly.
p1416: something about an air check valve.
its on the passenger side... part number
gm: 12565503
so in summation, sounds like you got two problems going on check with the guy before who had the car, find out of he gutted the cat AND if he tampered with the AIR system.
sounds like the cat is either shot (if in fact, still intact) or missing and the codes haven't been deleted.
and the passenger side AIR check valve is stuck open... -- Posted By: 2piececrank On: 08-01-2009 @ 00:00:56 Reply | Top | Edit
Sarav, how hard is it to follow Nietzsche? I read Machiavelli's The Prince earlier this year, and the only thing that was clear was to not trust mercenary infantry while fighting on the peninsula.

Well, thanks for the answers. I was just used to getting shit here about my Stealth, which I sold and bought a motorcycle anyways. Are you sure you guys didn't come out with the super duper secret mod? I remember it being something about a fan controller, lol. Was that a joke? And yeah, I guess it was more like 6-7 years ago.
First I'll start with the check valve on the air pump. I think they are like $10.
As for the cats, I don't know what to do from there. All he said he did was 'cut the mufflers off'. By that, he just cut the pipe before the mufflers. Didn't mention gutting the cats, and the cats are still there. Now, whether they've been welded back on after being gutted, I don't know.
Maybe it needs new cats, it has 185,000 miles on it. Still has great oil pressure (40-42psi at hot idle), a real testament to the longevity of LS1's.
So, you think she should put some high flow cats on there? Or could it be dirty O2 sensors? -- 1991 Dodge Stealth R/T 3.0 DOHC 24-Valve Twin Turbo Pearl White

^could be either or. i suggest finding someone with a scanner so you can monitor the voltage switching in the o2s. -- Posted By: 2piececrank On: 08-01-2009 @ 00:00:56 Reply | Top | Edit

It needs OE cats and probably a check valve. Don't use aftermarket cats if you want the codes gone for good. Be a good time to change all the 02 sensors with new OE sensors too.

Listen to harlan, but Mufflers(s) being cut off is bad. Assuming the car was stock, maybe the jackass cut the "mufflers" out of the y-pipe. That might explain things. -- 00' Trans Am convertible, M6 ,K&N, Edelbrock exhaust. SLP Loudmouth coming soon.
