my old roomate has a 92 rs 3.1 with a slush box

my question is what trans is that is it a 700r4? if not what is it and is it any weaker then one that was behind a 350?

I know it won't bolt to a 350 I told him that he want's to swap the bell housing. I think he should just get a trans that was behind a 350.

what do you guys think?

sorry I'm drunk right now I hope I did ok lol

Yes, the auto tranny in all thirdgens from 84? on were 700r4's. IIRC the gearing in the v6 and v8 trannys are different and it would probably be wise to just get a 700r4 from a v8 car.

Yes, it was a 700R4 and yes they are different. Not sure if they are weaker, but the gearing is different. I want ot say they are weaker, because I know the 700R4s that were in the 4.3L S-10s were weaker than the V8 counterparts.

And the bellhousing of that is integral to the case, so he'd have to swap the whole trans casing.

Actually post 89 they were 4L60's which had slight improvements over the 700R4

The 3.1L uses a 60* bellhousing which is not compatible with SBCs. You will need a V8 trans. The bellhousing is not removable like the newer 4L60E's

The V6 style trans is also weaker internally but not by much

Whatever he does, I want the old V6 harness

4.3L S10s used a V8 style 700R4. People swap them behind V8s all the time with no issues. Most likely he'll burn it up from improper adjustment (TV cable) before he rips the internals out of it

thank you all I'm glad I have more info to throw at him. I really don't think hes the kind of kid that can pull this kind of swap off I've been drilling him every time I talk to him about it he seems to think that he can just "drop a 350 in"

my guess is if he even starts it he will get half way through it then he will get pissed and call his grandma and she will send it to a shop lol

I wish he didn't live in f'n new york I would just do it for him lol

btw I really was drunk when I made this I really had no idea I made this thread till I saw it and was like O yea thats the thread about glens car!
