Beer Choices

Posted By: 2piececrank On: 09-27-2009 @ 00:35:03         Reply | Edit
Need some opinions. I'm trying to figure out what to get next after I finish this Eurogarbage beer. (OK, so it is Pilsner Urquell, not garbage, but just doesn't seem to stand up to the palate sexing that American microbrews have been coming up with lately).

Right now I'm deciding between a few higher end beers. So if anyone has some opinions, they are welcome.

1. Shiner Variety pack with the Bock (which was good), Blonde and Hefeweizen (How re these too? Worth a variety pack or would you just get a straight case of Bock?) Shiner runs like $28 a case here in case anyone is asking.
2. A Straub Special Dark or Yueng for now and wait for a Penn Brewery St. Niklaus Bock in the next month or two (probably low $40s/case).
3. Voodoo Brewery's Big Black Voodoo Daddy. 12%abv Imperial Stout, aged for years, in Beer Advocates Top 100 beers of the world. (last case of Voodoo ran me $80/ for 12-22oz, probably closer to $90 now). PS - I wholeheartedly recommend Voodoo Brewing. If you come across their stuff, it is well worth the expense.

Open to other suggestions depending on availability.

Yuengling??? Lol... Definitely not worth the hype. Its like people in Denver loving Coors (if they do). You are so blinded by the fact that it is local to realize that its actually a sub-par brew.

I've been steering away from the craft beers lately. As I'm back at school, I prefer to get a larger case of something mediocre so that I can drink a decent amount of them, and not worry when people want to snag a few. I've been drinking Labatts, Heineken, Red Stripe, etc.

Oaked Arrogant Bastard is a great beer. DFH 90 minute is still one of my favorites though.

Shiner Bock is my throwdown beer. I always keep it around and it's usually what I drink when I'm out because it's available everywhere here and I like it.

The Hefeweizen is pretty good, never had the blonde (dunno why really, it's readily available), I really like the Shiner 100 commemerator, but I didn't like the smokehaus. I'm not sure what all comes in the current variety pack so I'm trying to cover it all.

I've seen some of the Voodoo stuff but never picked it up. Maybe I will soon.

Sarav, how hard is it to follow Nietzsche? I read Machiavelli's The Prince earlier this year, and the only thing that was clear was to not trust mercenary infantry while fighting on the peninsula.

+1 on Dogfish Head 90 and 120.

There's a liquor store around me that sells microbrews singly. It's a great opportunity to try different things. Do you guys have a store like that nearby?

Ok, so been a little busy, but here is what I got after a visit to the new speciality shop in the area. Here is what I ended up with:

Victory Storm King
Shiner Bock
The Poet Oatmeal Stout
Dogfishhead Punkin (didn't see weyerbach pumpkin there)
Stone Levitation Ale
Something with a clown on it
Lindemans Frambroise (to share with the lady)
Rogue Dead Guy Ale

Yuengling??? Lol... Definitely not worth the hype.

Disagree completely. I pay something like $17 for 24 Yueng bottles. I don't think I can get a comparable quality beer for the same price. Way better than say Highlife or BL smoothies, and I would put it higher than Labatt too.

Anywho, I'm going to go before the Storm King turns my typing into drivel.

I agree on the DFH Punkin. I normally don't like punkin but theres a local restaurant/bar around here called red brick station that makes all their own beers in house (awesome place, they have the stills (sp?) and tanks and all that other stuff i don't know the names of in rooms with glass panels so you can see the whole process).

Anyway they have a pumpkin ale that's a seasonal brew for them and it was really tasty.

If anyone is ever in the baltimore area, check this palce out, tuesday is $1 beers (16oz) all day bar and dining room. They have 6-7 beers (they don't carry any other beers at all) ranging from a a light "ale" to a dark guiness style.

I thought Lionshead was Ok, but I prefer Yueng. I think that's just taste. Also, as I recall, Lionshead gives me shits about 1/2 as bad as Bud Light does, which is way more than I am comfortable with either way.

BTW, I'm sold on Storm King as my new stout. Maybe because I'm not a Guinness fanboy.

Storm King is definitely a tasty one. You really need to get to central PA visit Selin's Grove. Best beer you will have.

Three Floyds Dreadnaught is the god of beers, in my humble opinion. FFF Darklord is amazing aswell, but good luck finding it(stood in line for hours for it). Like Darklord, Pliny the Elder pretty much lives up to its hype (but I have to trade for it, as they don't distribute in Chicagoland). Lagunitas Hop Stoopid is a pretty good, cheap, and relatively avaibable beer here.
