Met an award winning journalist

Nicholas Kristof...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_D._Kristof

He was at my school giving a few lectures and stuff. What he covers is very similar to what my sister does (she lives in Sudan), so I figured it would be nice to get her a signed copy of his latest book.

First I went to a Q&A session, only like 15 people there. I was VERY disappointed with his answers and overall speaking ability.

I asked him a specific question about whether or not he thinks that the recent growth of Islamic Banking will have any influence on the use of micro-loans in developing Muslim countries.
He gave some generic, vague response.

Then I went to his lecture (hundreds of people) and was surprised to see that all of his earlier answers to questions were simply excerpts from his planned speech.

I know that none of you are fans of the NY Times, but this guy is one of the biggest names in journalism. It was pretty funny seeing someone who writes so well unable to communicate as one would expect.

In high school and college I was always told I was a great writer, ended up majoring in journalism, but if you tried to talk to me about something I've written about I'd sound like a bumbling idiot. It's a thing. One of my best friends is a journalist and to talk to him you'd think he's a complete moron, but if you read what he writes it's great. I think whatever skills make you good at writing don't translate well to interpersonal communication.

One thing I can do though, is write and deliver an awesome speech. Do a Q&A afterwards though, and you'll definitely think somebody else must've written the speech.

I'm not a "writer", but I tend to be able to write better than I can talk on the spot too.

But you aren't someone that has won 2 Pulitzers (no offense).

My advisor has written numerous books. Yet I have taken 4 or 5 classes with him, had weekly meetings with him for the past 3 years, and have never heard him say "um" once.

I guess I just figured that at that level, Kristof should have been able to do both. Oh well... I got the book.

^ I love people like that. "um", "uh", "like", and "you know" all drive me nuts...although as time goes on, I catch myself saying them more and more

It takes all my willpower not to kick someone in the shins when they constantly say "um." One of these days, willpower is going to lose out.

The worst was some kid that I was studying Arabic with. He spoke AMAZING Arabic, had a massive vocabulary and whatnot. The thing is, he said "like" and "um" constantly.

"Ana ohebb like athheb ila um almasjid kul yom like lianani ohebb like alnas um hunak"

1. In every language there is an equivalent of "like." My theory is that once you manage to incorporate that word into your speaking, you will sound fluent. Just picture hearing like and um thrown into a foreign language! It just sounds retarded.

2. How hard is it to pause for half a second to gather your thoughts instead of overusing those transition words??? In the end it will make you sound MUCH smarter, and you won't get kicked in the shins by Justin!
