Guitar players?

Posted By: Sheridan On: 09-12-2009 @ 20:51:55         Reply | Edit
If I remember correctly we have some guitar players on the site.

I've recently started playing guitar again (hadn't for 17 years) and I'm wanting to pick up an acoustic for cheap, used would be fine.

I have an electric but it doesn't really suit the kind of music I'm playing now (Ben Harper and the like).

Any brand recomendations or links?

taylor guitars. They've got high to low end. It's my #1 choice for acoustic guitars, even though I play a Gibson J-60. My next guitar will likely be a Taylor 514ce or 614ce. Taylors aren't exactly cheap but if you can find a used at an affordable price go for it. Taylor, Gibson, Martin, Dean, Takamine, etc.

Any idea on a lower end price range off the top of your head? Or better yet any specific low end models?

Check on craigslist for Taylor 110, 114, or 210, 214's. New they're going to run you $500+ but you should be able to pick one up cheaper than that. Honestly, you may be fine with a cheap Washburn or Ovation. How long have you been playing? I guess I was just recommending the best product out there but if you don't need anything like that it may not be worth the money to you.

Now that I think about it. Here's what I would do. Go on to guitarcenter.com, select acoustic guitars, pick your price range, look at different brands and select a few that you like, and then go in and play them. Now this part is entirely up to you. You could either search craigslist for used guitars in that area, which would even allow you to look for nicer guitars than what you could buy new, or you could just purchase your guitar new in the price range you selected.

I love craigslist but there are a lot of shady people on there so ask lots of questions (including more pictures if needed), examine the guitar closely once there, and it never hurts to make a counter offer.

Sheridan, I'm an Assistant Manager at Guitar Center in Charlotte. We have quite a bit of used guitars and of course TONS of new stuff no matter what price range you're into. I'm not tryin to jump in and be Mr. Salesman here, but I'd be glad to help you see if there's something I could hook you up with. If you want to either post on here or email me a few things I could recommend something fitting... Here are a few key things to narrow it down, and as mentioned before if you go to guitarcenter.com and search by price range it may help to get some ideas as well.

1. Price range. It IS the most important thing because there are TONS of options anywhere from $100 up to over $5000.
2. Do you want/need electronics or not?
3. Do you want/need a cutaway?
4. Does any certain color appeal to you more than others?
5. Does any certain brand appeal to you more than others?

If you post them here I'll be glad to respond, or email me at chevylover@ctc.net and I'll get back with you.

1. Price I'd really like to stay under $200 honestly, till I know I'm going to stick with it. I'm certainly open to a used one, even with some scratches.
2. Don't need electronics but wouldn't be opposed
3. Don't need one, but again not opposed no preference really, don't know the difference other than looks.
4. Color I'd like maybe black or a lighter tan I guess, not really picky
5. My problem is I don't know much about brands, but playability and a nice sound are what matter most. I won't be playing it every day for hours, probably a few hours a week. And won't be "performing" for anyone any time soon, just for personal pleasure or maybe a friend or two in my house.

Thanks in advance for the help,
Frank

Without being at work (on vacation till thurs.) I'm relying on what's on the website in combination with some good models we have in the store. I can check on what used guitars are there when I get back on Friday, but for now here are two good new ones to check out. Also, if you're interested in EITHER of these or ANY other new guitar on the site let me know... I can create a "quote" for you via email and see if there are any discounts available to hook you up with.

Under $200 and this is a good guitar for the price:

If you can go a little more, this guitar is FANTASTIC for the price:

I know diddly shit about guitars, but let me give you some music advice. The amount of time you spend per week playing is generally less important than playing every day. If you play for 30 min six days a week, you will get a lot better than just playing for 3 hours every Saturday. I didn't become a good sax player until I was practicing 4 different styles with practice 6-7 days a week.

Good point I'm sure. Lately I've done just that, playing a little bit each night with some exceptions. But then again I have nothing else to do at home. Once things get more normal at home I might not have quite as much time to devote to it.

You are right though, when I come back to it the next day it's like my muscle memory kicks back in.

I had a Yamaha a few years ago I bought on the cheap that was awesome. I doubled my money on it when I sold it. They were 300 at the local shop.

Also, My bro in law has an Epiphone that you can buy for 99 bucks now from musician's friend that sounds good and plays really well for 100 bucks.

Good Luck

Even if you just pick it up and run a few scales everyday, it will be much better than nothing at all. You need to do a lot to keep the dexterity in your hands up, because once it is gone, it takes forever to get back, and the longer you go without practicing, the worse it gets. Because of my lack of practice, I probably couldn't play 3/4 of the stuff I used to decently.

I haven't played since I broke my left hand and had to get a plate and some screws put in it, talk about loss of dexterity. It's coming back pretty quick considering I was never very good at it, but I am practicing a lot more regularly also.

yeah, I didn't say a whole lot about the two guitars I posted links to... The Takamine there is BY FAR the best guitar you can get for the price and a great investment if you're not wanting to dump more money than that into a guitar. To be a little lower priced guitar, the Mitchell is simply great bang-for-buck.

I'll have to see how my birthday goes this weekend, probably end up with $20 and a kick in the balls. I did read a lot of good things about the Takamine, sounds awesome.
