buying sawed off shotguns?

Posted By: armyof1 On: 08-28-2009 @ 19:01:01         Reply | Edit
I got a buddy who has a double barreled sawed off shotgun that looks cool as shit. He got it from his granddad and says its legal cause it was done professionally. Anyone know a place to buy these? gunbroker, etc don't have any.

Edited for pic of actual gun.

Most companies will not manufacture shotguns with a barrel shorter than 18".
The barrels you see shorter are either aftermarket or have been machined down, like you said.
The reason is federal law states something like "the barrel has to be 18"+ and the overall length has to be 26"+ or it is considered an SBS."
Once you get into the SBS (short-barreled shotgun) realm it's state-to-state.
I know there are states that allow them but you have to deal heavily with the ATF.

Why do you want one?
If you're going for looks then I'd say press on and see if you can get one.
If you're doing it for home defense I can tell you it's not worth it.

But to answer your question ...
No, I have no clue where to purchase one.
I will ask around at my gun club/range next time I'm out there.

Thank you chris. Yes, it is strictly for looks. I already have my home defense shotgun. Any ideas if weapons are still illegal if they are rendered inoperable internally?
