Turbo Rebuilds, a question

Posted By: cmerc On: 08-27-2009 @ 08:34:01         Reply | Edit
The guy who rebuilt my turbos said the problem was caused by contaminated oil, I don't believe it, but want to be sure, so heres what I did, do you guys thing this is a good indicator or not.

I had my mechanic change the oil filter and I strained the oil fron the filter through a coffee filter, I really don't see any debris in the filter, but I wondered if you guys thought this was a good enough test, I also plan to open the oil filter up and inspect it as well.

No, it's not really a good test.

The oil bypass valve is open a percentage of the
time under heavy pressure scenarios and the engine
therefore receives unfiltered oil.

You can either install a large capacity filter
to cope with the volume of oil and/or weld the
bypass shut (like most performance engines).

Turbo bearings are very fragile, it wouldn't surprise
me if dirty oil was behind the failure. Tough
to say without see pics at least.

^ thanks, but just in case you missed my original post, I had my turbos rebuilt (because one of the turbine wheels had disintergrated after about 80k miles, there was no smoking from the exhaust) and installed in February, at that time I had a complete service done on the engine which obviously included new oil and air filters, and an oil change.
One of the turbos failed within 3 months the other in 5 months. I sent the first one back and was told the bearings had failed probably due to contaminated oil.
Hence the reason for me checking the oil for contamination.

Cut the filter and see. I think this guy is lying through his teeth.

I once had a turbo LeBaron that I was running a built engine and bigger turbo on. I spun a bearing and threw shavings all in the oil. The car wasn't worth crap, so I just dropped the pan and replaced the bearings and kept driving it. Drove it for another couple years like that, and while I changed the oil at the time, I know I didn't get all the shavings out of it. Never had any issues with the turbo.

^ Brian, Tino, I had the filter opened and just had a look at it, result? clean as a whistle that settles it in my mind.
