New cell phone time, need some opinions

Posted By: jjdynomite  Yearly Donor since 02-05-2008 On: 08-10-2009 @ 11:38:03         Reply | Edit
Since i'm getting rid of my Storm, I'm looking for a good web capable phone. Since I'm still with Verizon, I'm limited with choices. Ive been with verizon for a few years now and although they dont have the best service in my area, they have the best customer service I've ever had from a cellular company.

These are the 4 I've narrowed down to, but in no specific order:

LG enV Touch http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=phoneFirst&action=viewPhoneDetail&selectedPhoneId=4787
LG Versa http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=phoneFirst&action=viewPhoneDetail&selectedPhoneId=4447
LG Dare http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=phoneFirst&action=viewPhoneDetail&selectedPhoneId=3885
Samsung Omnia http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=phoneFirst&action=viewPhoneDetail&selectedPhoneId=4366

All have overall decent reviews, with similar faults.

Any opinions towards either phone, good or bad?

wait another 5 months and get the Palm Pre when it comes to verizon.....

I have the dare, it is nice but I don't think it is really that worth switching too over the Storm. Although i think it is better it is missing a lot of features I wish it had and the touch screen interface is not quite as nice as the iPhone.

Between those I think it would be the enV touch. I think it is going to be very similar to the dare, but it is newer and will probably have a slightly better interface and usage. It is thicker though, which kind of stinks.

I will say, the dare has probably been one of the more durable phones I have ever hard. Over a year and I am still going strong with no problems and still get pretty darn good battery life. The web on the phone is nice - the most annoying part about it is scrolling down on pages.

The dare is more than 1 year old and the versa is just a cheaper version of the dare I think.

look at www.phonearena.com

I would wait, but my contract is up for renewal already (end of sept) and I need to switch to a different phone to cut some cost on our plan. I cut our plan back to 2 phones (had some fam included on the plan), both being blackberry phones and well it cost more that $60 over the plan just for the BB service for both.

Work gave us new Storm's so I dont need 2 of them or I would keep it.

I'll check that site out in a bit, thanks

Have you tried phonescoop.com there's a ton of info on there.

Good luck, I've got the BB Curve with Sprint so I don't know anything about the phones you mentioned.

i have the dare as well and i like the phone alot it has quite a few smart features. IIRC the env 3 touch is a rebadged voyager (which i had and loved also). the env3 would be alot thinkcer but also has a full qwerty keyboard and that comes in handy..

I like the flash on the dare and it makes a good flashlight. it is quite bright.

Let me know what you go with. My enV is messing up big time, turning off when it shouldn't, etc.
I need to get something new.

I bought a Nokia 5310 in Egypt. Its just overall sexy. The speaker on it is louder than my computer, etc. Unfortunately Verizon doesn't work with SIM cards, otherwise I would be using it here already.

I hate Verizon... I just shit canned them and went with AT&T. I know a lot of people hate them too but I wanted an iPhone.

Verizon has an annoying habit of limiting the features on their phones from the manufacturer. They claim it's to "streamline their customer service" but I doubt that.

Really? Ive yet to have ANY issues with verizon going on 4 years now. Nextel (Sprint) on the other hand was nothing but a headache, same as Cingular (now alltel).

i am pretty sure AT&T are the ones who took over cingular.

I don't know, verizon has great service in the midwest. They also don't limit there smartphones, but they definitely do on phones that use their interface.

This is why a Blackberry can tether to a computer and be used like a high speed connection through USB - and you have to pay $60/month if you want to do that with a dare, even though it is capable.

Also, the enV touch is the replacement for the voyager, not a rebadge. It is a better phone.

Verizon is by far the best service from what I have seen. Just in the sense of the quality of service and all. Its a shame they offer shit phones though.

^ that must be the compromise to their exceptional service/ customer service. The only issue Ive had with any verizon phone was with a BB, but that was my own lack of knowledge of the phone itself.

Thumper: you are correct, cingular is now at&t

i was just down at the vzw store and looked at the versa it looks like a scaled back copy of the dare. there are some physical differences the versa is a bit narrower and the button layout is different. but it has a lower megapixel camera and it doesnt have some of the features i like about the dare

I only have experience with the Omnia, but I really like it and have been planning on getting that as my next phone. I've played around with one of those and used my Dad's Storm a lot, and I can't stand the Storm, I think it's a terrible phone. From my few minutes with the Omnia and from the reviews I've read it sounds like a far better phone, and one I would be happy to have.

I went to the Verizon store on Saturday to check out some phones because I need a new one.. I didn't care too much for the Dare or the Blackberry Storm.. I ended up ordering the Env Touch and it should be here tomorrow..
