Family thruster?

Posted By: Tyrel On: 07-03-2009 @ 23:18:16         Reply | Edit
So with the upcoming baby, we've decided that our 2 door Accord coupe isn't going to be very practical. We can make it work, but i am gonna start looking for something to replace it. My wife loves her accord, i actually enjoy driving it. It looks good, handles fine, and is comfortable to drive, it also is fairly quick. Great wife car. I thought the logical next step would be to find a 4 door accord and be done with it...

... until my wife informed me that she liked and wanted this:

Too which, i promptly said "f no." i hate those, UGLY, and stupid.

So she wants me to come up with some alternatives, she wants a mid sized SUV. I want something that looks good, handles good, is fun to drive, and safe, and can handle snow. For in or around 25k. Used.

Okay fellers, give me some feedback and ideas. so far i've come up with:
Jeep Cherokee SRT8 (are they actually all weather capable?)
Trailblazer SS (again, is it REALLY an all weather?)
X5 (meh)

???

^ wow your wife wanted one of those?!?! Ewww honda and any import company making a truck is just heresy on its on little level.

Jeep Cherokee SRT8 are Freakin sweet i would pick one of those. But if you were getting one what year would you be getting? Aren't those suppose to be getting a 6.4l soon?

i'm a fan of the used market for her vehicles. She only drives maybe 20,000 km's a year, so i want someone else to have paid the depreciation. I want her to get a car, but she really wants an SUV due to practicality and she feels safer in them.

I would go for the trailblazer ss, or at least a trailblazer with the 5.3. never been a big fan of the jeep products, but with the company going like it is there are some damn good deals to be had on new ones marked way the hell down.

what I once thought was, is now no more.

I love the Honda pilots... I know I'm a fan boy for them, but its for a good reason.

The new jeeps are great too. One of my buddies has the srt8 (driven once), and another has the v6 that I've driven a few times. They drive well and feel great. I know that they have been the shop a few times though, not sure what the issues were unfortunately.

I got to take an X5 out on the town like 3 years ago. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice car (SUV)... just didn't do anything for me though. I didn't think it compared to the Touregs, benzs, or Cayennes I've been in/driven.

The mercedes SUV I have driven a lot is older. I forget the exact model. It was a blast to drive though.

I would go with a Trailblazer, either V8 or SS. The V8's go for cheap if you can find one, the ones I've seen have been cheaper than the 6. That would have selectable 4wd and decent all season tires.

The SS comes in either rwd or awd. The rwd would be terrible in bad weather, but the awd would be great...with the right tires. I believe they come stock with summer tires, and they do have 20 inch wheels. Whatever tires it comes with I would recommend dedicated winter tires on some different wheels.

I think the best choice would be a V8 EXT, even fully loaded with nav and dvd and leather you should be able to find one pretty cheap. They're rare though, so it might take a while to find.

The Chrysler Aspens are pretty nice. Our Durango has been very good to us, no issues at all. We have actually been looking to get something new but we can't find anything that will fill the void for less than 35k.

You have a nice list going already though

The FX's drive great. They handle really well for an SUV, they're nice inside, but they're not really that roomy. The Murano is pretty much the same thing, just a little more utilitarian.

FX45 is almost on par with the TB SS and SRT-8. I'm pretty sure it handles better, though it's not quite as fast.

The reason for the SRT 8 an TBSS is because i only like the look of them in that trim. Whereas the Murano looks pretty good regardless.

MY GOD i want a G wagon... the wife looked at it and just laughed at me, there is no way in hell that'll happen.

Family Thruster is a term for the family hauler, i think it stems from the National Lampoons vacation show.

I have to agree that the FX35 is a little small inside for what it is. They do drive nice though.

I haven't paid attention to the SUV market in ages though, so I don't have any recommendations. I work at Toyota, and they're suv lineup is pretty unappealing. So yeah, basically a worthless post.
