Whats the difference between a 9.75 and 12" TC?

Posted By: drauka On: 06-30-2009 @ 20:30:01         Reply | Edit
Ok obviously one is 2.25" large in diameter than the other, but every place I search lists both sizes for the 4l60e, what gives?

Also, whats everyone's take on lockup vs nonlock up? I hear the lock up is better for mileage but is terrible for the strip and vice versa.

I'm looking at the ACC bos hog street bandit 3200-3600 converter. I know everyone says to go with the big name brand guys, but after searching some other forums I see a lot of guys making really fast track passes on this brand and they seem to be doing well. I figure for almost half the price of a yank, vig, circle D I'll give them a shot.

Worst case scenario, I'm wasting $500 and a week of tranny work right?

Thanks all.

Good info here about the functions of a stall

Lock-up is an extra option. People choose lock-up vs non for cost reasons, much like power windows. For a street driven car Id suggest a lock up converter, drag cars non lock-up. Once you hit cruise speed in a street car the converter will lock up allowing zero slip between the engine and trans, so it is essentially direct drive.

What else are you doing to the tranny along with the stall?

I'm doing a tranny cooler probably now, before the stall, and i'll be doing the transgo HD2 shift kit as well.

Is there something else I missed?

All I can say is that I love my Vig 3200 with lockup. I bought it used for $375 shipped and have had it in tranny almost 2yrs now and close to 100 runs at the track without the 1st problem. I do plan on sending it to Vig to restall it up to 3600-3800 to match my new setup better. And that will cost less than $300 so I'll be getting a brand new high quality stall for cheap.

So after reading, am I correct in that a 12" is stronger and handles more power, but at the cost of some power since it takes more to turn it? And a 9.75 will produce more power but at the cost of durability?

Will they both physically fit in the 4l60e? What is everyone else running?

you should be fine with the 9.75 man...if you have any questions though id call vig or any other company that makes stalls and ask them

Also, when you plumb the cooler, plumb it after the stock radiator cooler. It alone is not enough to cool your trans and you will burn it up.

If your putting it in front of a 4l60e the last thing to break will be the convertor.

The 9.75 will rev faster and they usually have a high stall. The 12" will get out fo the hole better and drop less between shifts but slower throttle response on the street. For a street car with relativley low power I would use the bigger convertor.

Its like the light vs heavy flywheel comparison.

I have a cheap ass ebay restall that I have beat the piss out of and it locks up like a champ and stall right where they said it would, has too many passes on it and still kicken.

Troy: Are you using a 10" or 12" converter?

12", its a stock convertor that has been restalled.

I was told a bunch of horror stories about restalled stock convertors but this on has been a champ. I think it was only about 125 bucks off ebay.

I ordered an ATI converter for my TH400 they had a couple of diffrent sizes for the 400 I told them my specs on the engine, cars weight gearing and tire size and told them to send me what ever I need to run that. there was 8,9,and 10 inch, they sent me a 10 inch for my car. so for what its worth they wanted me to run the bigger converter.

Hm, thanks ron. I suppose calling the TC company and giving them specs is the best idea anyway.

Thanks everyone.
