When do you need to upgrade fuel system?

I always hear people talking about upgrading injectors and fuel pumps and whatnot, my question is: when do you need to upgrade these parts?
Is it a horsepower thing? Or only when you run F/I? Or when you run bigger heads and cam?
Can it hurt to go too big?
I've tried searching and everyone talks about it like its common knowledge, so it's hard to find info. -- '99 T/A Pewter A4 - SLP Lid, SLP LM, Pacesetter LT's, ORY, !emissions, Custom Floormats!!

Simple answer. If you can't tune it to the point that it's running too rich it's time to get more fuel. Easy to determine on a carb car by reading the plugs. It's a little more dicey when it comes to FI, a plug read will give you an idea of how close you are but a good tune is your best bet with mods. Some people might have some ideas to "judge" what you would need, but there really isn't a standard. There's no black and white when it comes to making power. -- 00' Trans Am convertible, M6 ,K&N, Edelbrock exhaust. SLP Loudmouth coming soon.

Run injectors 75%-90% and you'll be ok. Size them too big and the atomization/mixture won't be very good, size them too small and you can run lean or risk having them stick open.
Fuel pump wise, bigger is never really a bad thing. --

for the injectors, you really don't want to go any higher than 85% duty cycle. anything above that and it's too close to max. --

30lb injectors and pump will be fine for anything. My 26lb and stock pump were fine pushing 430rwhp on motor --

Good to know fellas.
What about the fuel filter? Is a cheapo $10 from autozone okay? I see n a few parts sites they have filters for like $50+, is it at all worth it? -- '99 T/A Pewter A4 - SLP Lid, SLP LM, Pacesetter LT's, ORY, !emissions, Custom Floormats! 13.27@106.27

deadly, that is not good advice. Duty cycle is the important factor, not wheel HP. My mild 383 needed at a minimum 31# injectors, so I went with 42#s instead. -- 95 T/A.

Stock replacement filter should be fine. The more expensive ones are usually aftermarket with AN fittings
Those are usually rebuildable
