So I finally started working on my IROC over the last few weeks. I replaced the ignition coil because the motor wouldn't start, then got a new cap/rotor (probably a better idea to start with)... but when I pulled off the distributor cap today, I had THIS:
Now obviously the contact on the rotor is fried... but WHAT THE HECK did the distributor itself do? It's rusted and broken into pebble-sized chunks. When I stored the car it was still running, but I can't imagine it firing in this condition.
Also, does anyone know if you have to pull the motor to replace the distributor... or can the top be rebuilt? UGH, my head hurts >_< On the plus side, I'm glad I've started to take the first steps to rebuilding my baby! --

thats the magnetic pickup that broke. the pickup tells the coil when to fire and whatnot, almost like a "crank positioning sensor".
you DO NOT have to pull the motor to replace the distributor. set the motor to top dead center, pull the distributor out, (14mm bolt under distributor base) drop the new one in facing cyl 1, bolt it up, plug it in, and drive it! -- UrbanDictionary.Com says: Jeremy: A named based on the biblical name Jeremiah. Thanks That actually makes me feel a ton better. I guess it's time to start pricing them out. This is going to be a spendy project, but at least I'll have the car back in good condition again --
