I've finally begun

Posted By: roubenbird On: 08-06-2009 @ 18:59:50         Reply | Edit
I have the motor and transmission out of the POS TA and tomorrow I'll start pulling the motor out of the Formula. So after a few years, this thing is going to be moving again.

So a quick question, is it quicker to pull the engine and trans or just the trans. Is it really that hard to get to the upper and mid bolts on the back of the engine?

Should i go at them from the top? Bottom, or with a lot of extensions from the rear?

Advise. Jon, Jeremey.

3rd gen is easiest to pull engine/trans combo

Above or drop the K member, both are easy

Upper bellhousing bolts are simple, 2 main methods
Box end wrench from above
Socket on a universal joint with about 3 feet of extensions with the tailshaft lowered from below

Bit of advice, leave the harness and accessories on the engine when you pull it. Undo the ECM and throw that side of the harness over the intake, undo the C100 (1/4 bolt) and lay that side on the intake

Coolant lines
Exhaust
Fuel lines
Trans lines
Motor mount bolts
Trans mount

Pull it

3-5 hours

Yeah, I just wanted to know if it was a huge pita to just pull the motor, I'll be pulling it together though. I already have everything disconnected. So, just pulling it from the ECU wasn't an option, but that is what I did for the TA though.

Today, I pulled everything off the motor/engine bay that would get in the way. Next time I work on it I'll only need to move the torque arm, motor mounts and lift off.

Now that I think of it I may take the bolts out of the torque converter while i'm down there and before it is out since I'm basically swapping transmissions. The Transmission from the TA is toast.

unless you have one of those engine tilter thingys, pulling the 2 together isnt going to be easy in anything you do.

Not true

The extra weight of the trans will make it point down, ideal for pulling

A leveler would be ideal, but itsnt necessary

Ive pulled engines with a length of seat belt. Its not very hard

interesting. i've always gone the route of pulling the tranny, THEN pulling the motor. i've pulled 3 third gen trans/motors. 2 were in 2 seperate pieces and one, i cut the radiator support and just pulled straight forward

WARNING, PONGO POSTING IN THE 3RD GEN SECTION, ANY STATEMENTS MAY NOT BE ACCURATE, OR FLAT OUT WRONG

This last time around I was tempted to drop the k-member and pull the motor/trans together but decided to go with the two piece method since I was already so familiar with it. Between a few friend's cars I've done tons of clutch installs, so I can pull the transmission with my eyes closed (well almost, but I did get it out in juste over an hour by myself). So I basically went the way where I wouldnt have to figure out anything new. Its probably easier to pull together once you get it down, but its not like I doing weekly motor swaps

Ah but like leadfoot I did pull an LS1 in once piece out of a junker car by sawing the radiator support, that was a lot of fun. Its amazing how fast the motor comes out when you arnt worried about the car

Not to be and ass but I'm not shipping to Canada. I went to the post office with it and they had no idea how to decipher the address and what not you provided me. I'm not saying I do not trust you at all. I'm saying there seemed to be too much potential for losing it. I guess my emails back to you don't even translate into Canadian.

The joke part comes in here..... It is as if the email was held up at the border.

I suggest taking the trans out with the engine. I didn't and when I had to go take the trans out by itself, it wasn't fun trying to get it on the ground and out from underneath lol.
