Running Horrible

Posted By: 91gtaws6 On: 05-03-2009 @ 15:09:21         Reply | Edit
Hey guys gotta problem again with the car. Engine started to run like there was a miss to it when it gets heated up. I shut the car off and it runs fine when i start it back up. Also it started to back fire after i accelerated rapedly and let off throttle. I started to run a little diagnosis and found that the engine started to run smoother when I disconnect the #2 Injector and stopped back firing.
So the next thing that I looked into was if it had the right injector in the #2 spot(which it does now) and problem is still the same. I also noticed that the #2 spark plug looks to have a lot of carbon build up on it. So I ran a compreddion test on the #1, #2 and #4 cylinders and all showed 165-170 psi. But i did notice that when i was doing a leak down test in the #2 and 4 cylinders it sounds as if air is leaking into the engine block itself. I can not make and sence outta this I hope that you guys can help out. Thanks

So, it only does it when it gets warm. Do you mean when it goes into closed loop? The computer starts reading the sensors after it enters closed loop. You may have a sensor that is broken.

Are you getting an SES light?

Yeah for the O2. code 44 for engine running lean, but you can smell fuel coming out of the exhust like it is running extremely rich. I am half tempted to just switch over the top end of the motor to a carb set up till i can afford to take car to the shop. I have replaced just about every sensor on the motor except for the air temp sensor on lower back half of upper plenum. (350 TPI Speed Density motor)
I just can not figure this thing out. It sucks when this happens to a car that you love.

Almost seems like a valve may be sticking. What did the leak down test tell you? Did the cylinders hold pressure? Don't just throw a carb on it, the intake is not the problem.

You may have an injector that is stuck as well. It'd just be pouring fuel in.

Also, if you don't have your adapter in the spark plug hole tight it will let the air escape. When I changed my valve seals I had that same issue. Then I found out I wasn't tightning the adapter enough. It would still hold up the valves, but would escape and the compressor (30 gallon Craftsman) would come on at least 3 times while working on one cylinder because it was loosing pressure. After I figured it out it never came on and the air leak was gone.

Good Luck

Yeah I am leaning more towards a valve issue since i just blew up the other two motors that the same guy did the head work on. I had 2 valves drop on the race car heads he did. I decided against the carb idea due to money it would cost more to do that than fix it. I started to tear down motor have not found anything wrong with the gaskets on the intake and injectors are in tight so I guess I just gotta pull the heads off and send them to another machine shop, I am thinking that he didn't do the proper valve job on both the valves and seats. Not happy with the machinest right now.
Thanks Guys will let you know.

Well guys I have caved in it has been three months this time that it has not ran right so I am going old fashion, I have the weiand intake and holley carb sitting at the house. New fuels pres reg, and all the plumbing, just waiting for it to stop raining for more than an hour to work on it. I found that the computer was part of the problem and that there were 3 injectors that had gone bad so I just said forget it for now i need it to be more reliable than it is now.
Car has not even seen the road for 2 months, it sucks having it in the yard and not being able to do anything with it. Thanks for all the help from past and present.

Going carb wont help if you indeed have a valve issue

Injectors go bad, they are old. Replacements are cheap and plentiful, why bother with the carb?

Whats wrong with the ECM? It works or it doesnt
