Idling problem

Alright i have a 1989 trans am gta wit the 350 tuned port engine and 700r4 tranny. it got hit the other week while parked at a mall but was just a fender bender and still drove fine. my dad and i took off the bent fender and it sat in my garage for a couple days and after i got the new one on and started driving it around the check engine light came on and it started idling at or around 500 rpm, other than that it drove fine. so my dad tried to adjust the idle but whenever he puts it up just a hair when we turn the engine off and back on the rpms shoot up to 2500 and wont go down. if you could tell me anything that could help i would really appreciate it.
