I hope I'm not the only one who remembers the old TH400 transmissions. You know how they would shift into second even if you left in low? Does a 700 do that? -- Mike

Me thinks you had a poorly adjusted shifter
Depending on the year, some 3rd gens had OD D L on the shifter. In that case, yes you can shift 1-2
On full range shifters, the gear you pick is the highest it goes

I had a '78 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 with a 400 trans. I drove it just about every day and also used it to plow snow and bogged it every now and then. I could leave it in low and it would shift into 2nd. When I would lay off the throttle, it would downshift back to 1st....all without touching the shifter. I thought they were all like that. It seems like I read something in an old Car Craft mag about them being like that for the drag racers. I will check the cable and stuff on the Camaro... -- Mike

Was it one of the ones that were P R N D L? If so, you never actually put it in first... L was second gear. --

Likely what it was
It makes no sense for the trans to ignore the shifter and do its own thing. There'd be no reason for the shifter then

My first car was an 81 Buick Regal that we'd put a 350 with a 400 trans in it. Other than it wouldn't downshift when hit the gas it worked fine and would only shift into the highest gear you selected. --

I thought it had PRND21, but that was a long time ago. Maybe it wasn't. Thanks for the thoughts. -- Mike 91 RS (Work in progress) Nice little 355, 700R4, Torsen w/ 3.42s, T-Tops http://www.myspace.com/mikefindlay44

funny, my buddy asked me this same question today about his 700r4 in his 82 GMC K10 4x4.
his column reads PRND21. and he says "dude, when i slam it in 1st, it shifts to second... is it broke or sumthin...?"
he has the 3spd gear indicator and linkage with a 4spd tranny. it never actually gets into first gear -- 1998 Dodge Neon Sport - 2.0 DOHC - MTx - 30.3 MPG City - Daily Driver

I had several old cars with turbo 400's that did the same thing.Rap it out real good in low and it would override and shift hard into 2nd.

OK guys....I'm not smoking my lunch. Talked to a trans shop and he told me it is caused by the governor. With the trans in 1st and the throttle @ 100%, my car was shifting at 5700 without me putting it in 2nd....just like my old TH400s. I called B & M, got a governor recalibration kit and in 25 minutes, had the new springs and weights in place. It now shifts itself @ 7400...perfect! It only shifts like that if you keep it in 1st and keep your foot on the floor. If you leave it in drive, it shifts normally up through the gears. -- Mike
