Rear end question

I have a 9 bolt rear with disc brakes in my IROC. It has a 2.77 gear in it. Without getting a 3 series carrier I can't upgrade to a higher gear ration. Also, from what I've read, 9 bolt parts are increasingly rare to find and expensive if you do. After all that you are still stuck with the factory option gears because no one makes aftermarket 9 bolt gears from what I've read. My posi works sometimes then it doesn't. Sometimes it will leave 2 solid marks and then it will leave one mark about half as long as the other. Or it will just leave one mark.
My question is; What's wrong with putting fourth gen rear in my car? I know that they bolt up, but will my rims fit? It seams that someone said they stuck out a bit, why is this? Is the offset wrong, is the rear end too wide? If it is to wide, why can't you cut a small piece out of each side of it weld it back up? Then get new axles that work or if it's only a bit and you have enough of the splines left just cut a bit off the inside end of the axle so it will be the same width as the original. Also, will the stock rear 4th gen disc brakes work with a 3rd gen master cylinder since my car has disc's anyways.
Thanks. --

I didn't realize it was 2 inches wider on each side when I asked the question about cutting down the axles.
I don't think that would be possible, you'd probably have to buy new ones.

I saw some pics on TGO and it doesn't really look that bad. I mean if you didn't know it was changed you probably wouldn't unless you were into Camaros and Firebirds and noticed such things. It's probably the route I will take. Cheaper and I get a the better gear ratio and parts are readily available. --

The rear end is a direct swap, but I want to keep the IROC factory rims. --

The pics I`ve seen the tires are even with the fender lip.Doesnt look bad to me.The master cylinder should be fine.I think the rear drum cars needed to use an adjustable wildwood proportion valve to get the rears to work properly. You may not need to.The topic has been discussed at length on TGO.If its the later years you may need to modify the brake lines. And from what I remember seeing the diferent years of 4th gen rears varied in width. Some not being the whole 2 inches sticking out on each side. -- 1987 Iroc Z,Red w/T-tops.Formaly LB9 now all new GM L98 short block.LT4 production cam w/1.6 full r.r.ZZ4 heads, built 700r4,2500 stall,3.42 gears.Hooker 2460 headers, custom y-pipe,3" I-pipe to flowmaster muffler.Ported TPIS lower manifold,SLP runners and ported plenum about to go on.8.5@82 MPH
